The provincial Agriculture De- partment said Tuesday in its week- ly crop report that recent cold, wet weather has caused only minor set- backs. All crops are reported mak- ing good progress. In many coun- ties, cattle and sheep already have been turned out to pasture. Recent minor frost damage is re- ported from a few sections. In Northern Ontario, where some districts still have snow, spring CFRB4 operataions are not as far advanc- ed. On higher land, however, seeding is well under way. . Spring In Sweden Best In 50 Years Stockholm -- (CP) -- Bathers flocked by the thousands to sea beaches at Gothenburg during April as Sweden enjoyed its earliest and warmest spring in 50 years. In southern Sweden, farmers let their cows out to graze in April-- something which had not happened for half a century--and the sprout- ing of spring grain was reported from many areas. In southwestern Sweden a tem- perature of 73.4 degrees Fahrenheit was recorded April 18. PARISH COUNCILS Counties in Denmark are sub- divided into 1,300 parishes, each CFRB | administered by a parish council, Copt. 1948, King Features Synd ate, Inc, World rights reserved. Every Communist eandidate - who has stood for parliament in recent years has lost his deposit and even in municipal elections they have usually been near the bottom of the poll. However, they 'have gained considerable influence in trade un- ions and a campaign was begun recently by ministers of the labor government against this influence. Ministers warned unionists of the power Communists were acquiring in their ranks and urged that they be voted out of' executive positions. The Auckland Waterside Workers' Union, one of New Zealand's most militant unions, responded by vot- ing A. Drennan, chairman of the munist ticket was put up to contest the executive and all minor gom- mittees. The result was the complete rout of the Communists, who held | a dominating position in the previ- | ous executive, The president of the | council, Drennan, was defeated as were the Communist vice-president and secretary. Every member of the anti-Communist ticket was elected | to the executive, the only sitting member to retain office being a member of the Labor party. | Further support for the Auckland government's anti-Communist drive | was given at the annual meeting of | the Auckland Engineers' Union when the Communist secretary was turned out of office. Another victory for Labor govern- ment supporters against militant left-wingers was gained at the an- nual conference of the Federation of Labor, the central trade union | body fér New Zealand. Left-wingers | who had gained several successes last year were overwhelmingly de- feated for all posts on the executive by moderates who endorsed the gov- ernment's policy of settling indus- | trial disputes by arbitration.
