WEDNESDAY, MAY 12, 1948 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE FIFTEEN Northern Scots Protest Ending Of Air Service By JAMES McCOOK Oanadian Press Staff Writer Inverness, Scotland -- (CP) -- Capt. E, E, Presson, Scottish coun- terpart of a Canadian bush pilot, is the centre of a controversy involv- ing Scottish rights, nationalization and mercy flights. : For 15 years he operated an ait service .in the misty Highlands be- tween Aberdeen, Inverness, Wick and Kirkwall, Orkney Islands. He flew over the 200-miles route with 95 per cent regularity and won the first Britain internal air mail con- tract. An ex-R.AF, pilot, who travelled from China to Camp Borden, Ont, in 1917 where he soloed after 4% hours instruction in a "Jenny", he made numerous mercy flights in bad weather to lonely islands v. here a pasture was his landing field. He was as much a legend of Inverness as "Wop" May in Edmonton, Alta. | British civil aviation was nation- alized by the Labor government and Fresson became northern area manager of British European Air- whys, a Crown corporation. In March he was called to London and told the cerporation must simplify its organization due to economic difficulties and his ser- vees would not be required further. Some Scots protested this was another example of discrimination against aviatiol development -in Scotland. The Inverness and Aber- deen chambers of commerce made formal protests. They were sup- ported« by Walter Elliot, a former Conservative cabinet minister. Poor Example "To sack those who can fly and retain those who can only talk may encourage parrots but it is a poor way of developing eagles," wrote Mr. Elliot. Within a few days, four appeals for planes to carry sick persons to hospital came from the Orkneys and other islands. B. E. A. had no machines available and could find none to undertake a charter flight to areas where landings would be difficult. Fresson said he had asked to be allowed to operate a de Havilland Dragon plane suitable for ambu- lance work and which he had used in the past. BEA, had refused his request. Sir Pagrick Dollan, chairman of the Scottish Advisory Council for Civil Aviation, later said there was ASPHALT SHINGLING Insul-Brick Sidin General Carpenter Work Fully Experienced Workmen W. D.
