Their famous easy humor, along with the antics of the eccentric Allen's Alley resi- dents, the singing de Marco Sisters, and Al Goodman's orchestra are heard Sundays at 8.30 p.m. EDT, on the OBC Trans-Canada network. Guest artist on the May 23 broad- cast will be the groaner himself, Bing Crosby, Fred Allen's show business career began in 1912, when he was billed as a joking juggler, and he and Portland Hoffa have been a regular radio team since FARMER - LABOUR BROADCAST CHARLES H MILLARD : ot meoooet | SLEY J ATERLOC ARMER TONIGHT-10.30 "Daylight Saving Time CBL AND ONTARIO NETWORK' "The CCF Program for Farmer and Worker" LISTEN IN TO CKDO OSHAWA 4:30--Ople Cates Show 4:30--Your Hosv Peter Gust 4:30--Lorenzo Jones Sonal $3 Winner Take All 4:30--New: 4 35-1050 "Masines 4145~Dick Trac 4: Se um the Torasstcs 4:45--New: 4: 45-- Youn Widder Brown 4:55--Catholic Charities 4:55 Maine Miniature :00--New:! 5: }00_ Broadway and Vine 5:00--News; Mike Hopkius Show CHUM | 5:00--Tommy Dorsey CJBC 5:00--Dick Tracy 5:00--News 5:00---When a Girl Marries 5:00--Veterans Varieties 5:05--S8tudlo - Party : IRISH ROSE CBC Movie Critic Pulls No Punches In Sunday Talks By JACK McNEIL Canadian Press Staff Writer Listeners who tune in to Clyde Gilmour, the CBC movie critic who broadcasts from Vancouver every second Sunday, are invariably fore- warned by an announcer that Mr. Gilmour's opinions are purely his own, That's because Gilmour--a news- paper man, magazine contributor, drama student, amateur actor and singer and collector of folk-songs-- won't review movies unless he's al- lowed to give his "own forthright opinion. "My aim is to make this a quarter - hour of straightforward criticism of the kind most useful to Canada's movie-goers," says Gil- mour, a chunky man with thinning black hair and genial blue eyes. "I like to review all the current movies, whether British, American or for- eign, and sometimes I go back into the past for a look at some of the old-time productions. I'm as forth- right and outspoken as I please, and let the chips fall where they may." And the chips fall aplenty on someof the most haloed heads of | judges solely on merit. moviedom. Assuming the average movie-goer to be a person who de- mands adult fare, the movie critic pulls no punches in his reports to his listening public. He coldly ig- nores such Hollywood ballyhoo as the super-colossal cost of a film, or how many thousand extras parade across its scenery. With trenchant wit and a- mean gift of the gab, he The result is refreshing. Radio broadcasting is only a side- line for Gilmour, who spends his working day furthering a strenu- ous newspaper career, Since 1945, he has been on the staff of the Vancouver Province as feature writer and movig reviewer. Gilmour learned newspaper work of the hard way--by teaching him- self. He started in Medcine Hat, Ala, as a reporter and circula- phonies to popular hot stuff--keeps him broke. During a war-time tour of duty as a public relations officer with the Navy, when he served in New- foundland and overseas, Gilmour managed to pick up so many out- of-the-way folk songs he was a natural for guest appearances with Vancouver's famous balladeer, Ed McCurdy. In fact, Gilmour has such an in- satiable appetite for music that he's sometimes hard put to it to find a dime for a cup of coffee.
