THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE THURSRAY, MAY 27, 1948 Campbell Oshawa wrestling fans who like their grunt "n' groan sport to be rough, rugged and rowdy, should get their fill at the Oshawa Arena tonight, when Promoter "Pat Milosh pri ts his latest mat show. fy The "Sport Snapshots $5.00 Club," organized by this writer to give our regular sport column readers their opportunity to make a contribu- tion, yia a membership fee, towards assuring Oshawa of a new sports stadium, with the total proceeds of the $5.00 Club to go to the Kinsmen * Civic Memorial Stadium fund, is apparently still "unknown" to many :-=:+fans. While the enlisting has slowed down, each day we come across the odd one or two who hadn't yet heard about our club or didn't under- stand just what its purpose is. We had four more members join up .., yesterday, to bring the total to $1,085.00 and with a little luck and a "= {§A¢ more members, we'll be over the $1,200 mark by the end of this ; 8 , which will put us well on the way to reaching the $2,000.00 objective ; by Dominion Day. To + * * One of our contributions yesterday was made by one of Oshawa's lady sport fans, who attends mest hockey games as well as many of ..5 the summer activities. The membership is "in memoriam" for her Lia husband, who prior te his death was one of the keenest of sport followers and who, if he was still here, would most assuredly have joined our club. The other members were His Worship Magistrate + Frank S. Ebbs, whe has always been a keen sports booster, as a 'spectator, ever since he got {oo old himself to tote a hockey stick and .then in later years, put away his tennis gear; "Bob" Patte, one of the 'younger generation of local athletes, who is best known as one of the good second basemen developed in the Oshawa Minor Baseball heague in recent years, but also shone at OCVI in basketball and other sports, and Alderman "Mike" Starr, who back a few years was a member of the "Ukrainian Nationals" when that softball team was one of the best in the city and the pride of the south end. ) > + * ~All teams planning.to enter the Intermediate "A" softball league race, under the banner of the Oshawa City and District Softball Associa- ... fion, are reminded that the certificates for this league will be handed . out tonight, at a meeting called by President Johnny Brady, which is .-being held at 7:30 o'clock, at the Hotel Genosha, Pedlars, UAWA and GM-Colts seem like the only three entries expected to play this season, I: "Fhe "Colts" were in the doubtful class too, for a while, but following a cotiflab last night, it was decided that sufficient players were still avail- able to round out a contending team and the first practice workout will be held by the "Colts" on Monday night of next week, at Alexandra 3 The main bout itself promises to be a sizzler. The Palermo Panthers, better known to the wrestling fans around these parts and elsewhere as John Katan, takes on Dr. Ed. Meske and the bone-bending "Doc" is a rugged character and chiro- practor who takes keen delight in "operating" upon husky patients such as John Katan, Katan's Rep. Is Tough However, Katan has a tough re- putation and he has done a bit of back-busting and muscle-mauling himself, in the past twenty years and it's a cinch he'll resent in vig- orous fashion, any advances that Dr. Meske may offer to make to- wards changing his (Katan's) ana- tomy. Katan uses both his weight and size to full advantage, likes to put his opponent on his knees and en- force a little prayer for mercy--so the fans who "just hate those. vil- lains" will have a real chance to howl tonight. The semi-final bout will be just as interesting--if not more so. It brings together Tommy O'Toole, a rugged Irish gent of the mat wars, who made a favorable impression in his bout bere the last time. He will be opposing "The Masked Marvel", Now the Masked Marvel got a decision down here last week that was a little on the "smelly side", so a lot of the fans thought anyway, and if O'Toole can whip the Marvel tonight and thus force him to unmask, shure, and be jab- bers, old St. Patrick himself (no relation to Milosh) will join in the celebration. Bowmanville Again In the curtain-raiser, they have O'TOOLE AND MASKED MARVEL CLASH IN TONIGHT'S MAT SHOW . to have one of those even though they have no curtain, Billy Stack of Bowmanville takes on George Pit- keatly. This latter grappler, with a rather peculiar name, is a newcom- er to the local wrestling bouts but Promoter "Pat" insists that he's not only big enough but good enough to make it more than interesting for the temperamental Mr. Stack, We'll know better after we take in tonight's show. Strikeouts His pitching record was not full of "easy outs" either, as he counted 15 strikeout victims, and issued only four free passes to first base. Bow- manville used two pitchers, Stur- rock till the fifth, when Oshawa had collected nine runs, and West, theg ame. These boys gave up 11 hits and 11 runs between them and they weren't ~given the -upport that should be"asked of a junior team. Their fielding showed five errors to Oshawa's one. Oshawa got off to a very good start in the bottom of the first inning, when after holding in check the Rotary batsmen, they went to work with a will, and scored five runs on their own hook. Crabby Joxitoski was lead-off man and he bingled a single to left field. Tutak was hit by the pitcher, and men were on first and second. Crabby stole third, and Tutak followed With the automatic to second. Motor City under Mroczek"s long arm, 'held - Bowmanville in check again, and again it was their turn to start batting. Two runs on sharp singles into centre field by Maeson and Milne did the trick, and two more runs crossed the plate, making the count 7-0 against Bowmanville. The third inning was a repetition of the second and first for the Rotarians with Mroczek and Mec- Arthur forming #he perfect batte anid making it three up, three dow Came the last of the third and to prove that he can do more than pitch, Mroczek stepped into the first pitch to him and blasted it way out into right centre field for a home run. Not bad for a guy pitching such a game. Bowmanville went down in three straight again in the fourth and it was Oshawa's turn at bat. Mec- Arthur got to first on a walk and the ever-faithful 'Junior Milne came through with a timely single to punch home the run making the count 9-0. Twin Killing The fifth frame saw Oshawa execute a double play in the Bow- m.nville half of the frame. A pop fly to shortstop Milne and a quick throw to first caught the runner off the bag for the twin killing, Rowmanville kept Oshawa off the score sheet in the fifth and sixth frames, and of course Oshawa did the same in return.
