W. PHONE 389 A Physician Advises You By HERMAN A. BUNDESEN, M.D. CONDITION DUE TO UNHAPPINESS AS we all know, happiness is a great tonic. The bad effects of chronic dissatisfaction with life are less readily demonstrated, but now and then we do see disorders which are traceable directly to this cause. One such condition seems par- ticularly to affect young women. Their chief complaint is shortness of breath, together with a feeling of tightnniesscmfwyp shrduletaoni of tightness in the chest and noticeable beating of the heart. Attacks of this sort do not last long but they may recur on and off for weeks at a time. Consult the Doctor These patients frequently consult the doctor because they fear a pos- sible heart condition. Careful phy- sical examination, however, will re- veal nothing wrong with either heart or lungs, and questioning bring out the fact that such pa- tients do not become short of breath as the result of exertion, as do those with organic heart disease. Furthermore, the attacks Tarely come on when their attention is fixed elsewhere, that is, when they are busy and interested in their work. Almost uniformly, are nervous, over-fatigued, and basically unhappy, These things have undermined morale and made | them a prey to unreasoning fears. | Often the reassurance of the doctor | that nothing is seriously amiss with the heart is enough to banish the | attacks, but sometimes help in eli- minating severe emotional disturb- ance 'is also necessary, A Serious Form A more serious form of thg con- dition' is one in which deep, sighing breathing is prolonged or is re- these women placed by rapid, deep and forceful breathing. This may cause the | patient to become light-headed 'and | tingling or numbness in the fingers | | and toes may develop. In these patients, the background of unhappiness or trouble is more evident. Often there is a history of | family illness or overwork. The at- tacks may be brought on by pain coming from various causes. In treating this more serious con- dition, sician to gain the patient's confi- dence and explain to her just what is occurring. Controlling the breathing at the beginning of an attack, deliberate avoidance of rapid breathing, or holding the breath a little, all may help prevent or break up a threat- ened attack. Of course, an attempt must be | made to find the underlying emo- tional troubles and to get rid of them. Any physical disorders must be discovered and treated. With sympathetic and tactful handling by the physician, it is possible in nearly all instances to clear up this kind of disturbance. Shortness of breath may also in- dicate some disturbance of the heart or lungs. Hence, when it. occurs, there is always need for a thorough study by a physician. When the exact cause of the disturbance is | found, proper treatment may be carried out. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS M. The plaintive tune jumped to the top of the "Hit Parade" and is be- ing: poured forth from every juke box and disc show. Comedians, cranks, agents and fans are clam- oring around its composer, a 35- year-old ex-fruit picker. He some- how remains serene. Attired in his usual sandals, work pants, sweat shirt and overcoat, Ahbez (rhymes with hobbies) was found in the NBC studios. I sug- gested "Nature Boy" had brought many changes to his life. "Not at all," he answered in his soft voice. "I have to meet certain business obligations. But action "is on the surface; at the centre is the spirit. "My life is still devoted to the contemplation of nature and its wonders. This success gives me more opportunity to further that end. I hope to spread out to other mediums, perhaps the screen.' Still in Back Yard Brooklyn-born of Jewish-Scots- English parents, vegetarian Ahbez continues to live in a Los Angeles back yard. Besides his bicycle, he now has a jeep, a gift from his publisher, What has he done with the proceeds of the song? "I hvaen't seen any yet," he said. He cwns 75 per cent of the rights and his profits should.be more than $20,000 before taxes. Money seems not to concern him. "An agent of- fered me $3,000 a week to appear in night clubs," he said, "but I turned it down. That's not the way I want to follow the 'Nature Boy' idea." The composer's wife expects a baby in October, but they don't plan to alter their way of living. "A child ean grow up in a nur- sery or a forest," he remarked. "It's not that we want the children to grow like us; we want to grow like the child." Ahbez is leaving for New York, where he will meet for the first time his song's popularizer, King Cole.
