It sounded exciting. ading on she discovered that cians explain curly eyes as the open expression of naive uth, Women get the same effect or something like it -- by apply- hg a light film of eyelld pigment d blending it upward at the far ads of the eyes, and by using cray- on the lashes, extending the nat- al line a fraction of an inch be- bond the growth of the silky fuzzers. You might try this little trick me time when the heavy date is and you are flaunting your andest dry-goods. Be deft. Use re- raint, Blue shadows are safest. they are becoming to blonde and unette. BUNDESEN, M.D. DIZZINESS IN THE AGED BLDERLY people often consult the doctor because they are bothered by dizziness, whichis made more distressing by their fear that it means an impending stroke or other fatal disease. More often than not, dizziness in the aged is not serious, and yet, be. cause grave as well as trivial disor- ders can cause this symptom, it is never safe to neglect it. Other Symptoms Sometimes dizziness seems to be the only untoward symptom. On the other hand, it may be associated witia headache, sickness at the stom- ach, vomiting, or constipation. In those cases where constipation is a factor, the giving of a mild ca- thartic or enema may bring com- plete relief. Where dizziness is ac- companied by headache, vomiting and sickness at the stomach it is important to make sure thaty brain temor. or brain-hemorrhage/is not .|at the root of the trouble. nosing the former, the X- great help. . Group of Nerves Pressure on a group of nerves, known as the carotid sinus, may produce an attack of dizziness. These nerves, located in the neck, are often very sensitive in the aged. If they are responsible for the diz- ziness, pressure over the cartoid sinus will reveal it by causing an immedizte attack. The disorder known as Meniere's syndrome also causes this group of syndrome. This disorder results from disturbances of the internal ear. In the elderly, psychological fac- tors also may be responsible for the symptoms of dizziness, together with headache and nausea or sick- ness at the stomach. Normal, aged persons are frequently frustrated by the restrictions put upon thee. Often misunderstood by their fami- lies, who mistakenly interfere with normal activities, they find them- selves thwarted at every turn. In such cases, readjustments are nec- essary to eliminate the symptoms produced by the psychological up- sets. - Thus, in all instances in which dizziness develops in elderly people, there is first need for careful study to make sure that no actual disease of a dangerous nature is present. Then an inquiry must be made into the patient's mental reactions. Once the cause for the dizziness is found, it can, as a rule, be. eliminated easily. . QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS R.AM.: What kind of injection can be given for measles? Answer: There is no injection known which will permanently pre- vent eeasles. Temporary protection may be obtained by giving an in- jection of immune globulin or con- valescent serum soon after exposure of the child to the disease. Such protection. may last for from two to four weeks. Varied Needlework A pair of delights! LJ] FEW women are so blessed with pulchritude that they can wear a perfectly plain, sleeked back hair- do. It is smartias all get out if one can get away with it. All right for those beauteous charmers who pose for fashion pictures, but a bit try- ing on the average girl. Hair stylists are now offering coiffure designs that have just en- ough wave lines to take the curse off the plain arrangement. They are cap fitting, will go under any kind | of a hat, will stay in place through- out the whole day. No ringlets, no fuss stuff, but chic, youthful and becoming. Permanent Wave One needs a. sfrong permanent wave to give body and an appear- ance of abundance, especially if the hair is thin and silky. Tresses are cut about five inches below the nape line and turned under. A great comfort to one, is that mode, since one isn't bothering to put rear whisps up on curlers. There may be a low side part, with the hair swept back on a slant at theright side, with one or two wide wave lines, and the ends tuck- ed in. Or, the forelock is brushed straight back with wave lines from crown to rear, and ends turned under, page boy fashion. One style shows a side parting extending to the nape line, with the hair brought forward forming muffs over the ears. With the front of the hair almost | W L + severely plain, one can have a roll that extends slightly . outward at either side and continues along at the back. Sumner Season Simple arrangements are wel- comed by every girl and wotan during the summer season. Outdoor sports become more popular every year and one hates to bother to re- build a coiffure that is more or less elaborate. After a swim, one can put one's hair in perfect form | with a few swishes of the comb and an expenditure of three minutes' time. Fine and dandy, if you ask us, or even if you don't. A good way to dress upa simple summer hairdo is to purchase a real-hair braid. With this, you can have a variety of new hairdos. But neglect of the teeth be- fore and during the period of preg- nancy often causes the loss of more than one tooth as well as much needless suffering. All dental defects should be cor- rected -early in pregnancy and the teeth kept in good condition throughout this period. Dental | treatment at that time is no longer considered dangerous. CORNELIUS BEECKMAN Dear Mrs. Beeckman: My husband and I have just re- ceived an invitation to a Twenty- Fifth Wedding anniversary: dinner. A card enclosed with the invitation informed us that the price was ten dollars per couple. We would like to know if this is correct. Isn't a wedding anniversary dinner usually paid for by the couple who are cele- brating their anniversary? Anxious Now I've heard everything! Such an invitation is preposterously bad taste, and makes a mockery of graciousness and hospitality. Of course the dinner given to celebrate a wedding anniversary is paid for by the husband and wife who are celebrating their anniversary or by their children who are giving the dinner in their honor. But it is a new low in bad taste for a couple to invite friends to an anniversary dinner and hold them up for the cost of the dinner. (The couple un- doubtedly expect the guests to bring presents, too!) If they can't afford to give the dinner! they should plan the kind of entertain- ment they can afford, or else make no point of a celebration. Anyone who accepts this kind of invitation must be pretty hard up for "enter- tainment!" Concerning Thank-You Notes For Stork Shower Gifts . . . And Birth Announcements Dear Mrs. Beeckman: 1. When -one has thanked each friend personally for her gift brought to a stork shower, is it ne- cessary to write each one a thank- you note? How about a gift from a group of friends? 2. Should each of the neighbors who came to the shower receive a birth announcement? Exactly who should receive birth announce- ments? Only friends who live out- of-town and whom we probably wouldn't be seeing for some time, or our friends in the city also? And should we aiso send them to ac- quaintance; in my husband's place of business (he is a supervisor in a manufacturing plant)? This is our first baby (in case this fact makes a Gifference in your answer). HEM. 1. Perhaps it isn't "strictly neces- sary" to write each generous friend a thank-you note for her kind thought . . . but it's a mighty nice thing for you to do. By taking the time to write a note of two or three enthusiastic sentences you will make happy the friend" who tried to plan a gift to make you happy. And that's nice social going! 2. There really aren't any defi- nite rules about sending birth-an- nouncements, but, if they are sent, they are usually sent to the entire list of one's relatives and friends, those who live out-of-town, of course, and those who live in-town so that they may, if they wish, save the announcement as a keepsake or as a record of the birth date. Or- dinarily they are not sent to ace quaintances, either social or busi ness, since it would not be assume ed that they. would be particularly concerned with the news. An ts For S Dear Mys. Beeckman: Is it preper to send -announce- ments of the birtlx of a second baby, as it is over the birth of the first baby? Mother-to-be Yes. d Baby Hardly a day goes by that the children aren't hurt at play or that some member of the family doesn't suffer a painful cut, burn, bruise or scrape.
