(150c) New Brunswick Is Voting Today For Legislature Fredericton, June 28--(CP)--New Brunswickers trooped to the polls today to elect the province's 20th and largest legislature. Polling was from 8 am. to 6 pm, EDT. Onyl 47 of the 52 seats in the new legislature remained to be set- tled by the voters today. Five Lib- erals were elected by acclamation in Gloucester County when nomina- tions closed June 24. The new 52-seat house, brought about by a partia] redistribution which added four seats, gave the province its largest legislature since confederation, Liberal forces under Premier John B. McNair were oppose dby 40 Pro- gressive Conservatives under Hugh MacKay, 20 C.CF. standard-bear- ers under Joseph Arrowsmith, eight Independents and five Social Credit- ers, At dissolution May 18 standing in the 48-seat house was: Liberals 36, Progressive Conservatives 11, Inde- pendent 1. 'The Conservatives won 12 seats in the 1944 election but later dropped one to an independent in a by-eelc- tion. The independent--E. Claude Seeley--sought re-election today in Saint John County. Campaigning for today's battle of the polls was mild. Most candidates relied on news- paper advertisements and radio broadcasts to carry their message. A break occurred Saturday when a plane droned over Saint John in a Sumy sky dropping campaign leaf- ets. Both Premier McNair and Mr. MacKay were fighting their second campaigns as leaders of their res- pective patries. Mr. McNair took over the Premiership following the resignation of A. A. Dysart in 1940 and fought his first campaign four years later, Mr. MacKay appeared as Progres- sive Conservative leader in the same election. Mr. Arrowsmith, although no poli- tical babe in the woods, was mak- ing his first appearance as party leader. He contested a seat in the 1939 provincial election to be the {first ' candidate to run under the C.CF. banner in the Maritimes, A. W. ELLIS DIES Petrolia, June 28--(CP) -- Arth- ur W. Ellis, 67, for 32 years a weekly newspaper publisher here, died Sunday. Since retirement in 1943 he was an editorial writer with the Petrolia Advertiser-Topic. Mr. Ellis was born in Walkerton, Ont.
