Toronto Traffic Problem Is Seen Growing Worse Toronto, July 9--(CP)--Ontario's biggest city has a traffic 'problem of "exceptional magnitude," it was in- dicated in the publication this week of the findings of a Greater Toron. to Planning board. Facts and figures in the report show that 25 per cent of all vehicles registered in the province are owned by citiens of Toronto and suburbs. They also reveal that for the 105,- 000 cars that daily enter the down- town area, parking spaces number but 16,500. The traffic experts predict that in another 10 years 200,000 cars will cram the same area unless steps are taken to prevent it. Every day now, cars are jammed into every laneway, empty lot, cram- med into every car storage building and manoeuvered into every legal and illegal curb space. Cars glut the streets and inter- fere with the commercial vehicles whish carry on the business of the city. The traffic 'experts recommenda- tion to alleviate the ever-worsening situation is to give first priority to mass transportation, The brief concludes: "If the pub- lic of Toronto and York County is progressive in its traffic thinking, viewed it in its all-encompassing value, responsibility and effect on the future, it can be certain that Toronto's downtown will become a tract of 1,000 or more efficiently busy acres, instead of the present 381 traffic-jammed hive of suffer- ing acres and Toronto itself will have true metropolitan greatness." FRIDAY, JULY 9, 1¢ Rail Unions In U.S. Accept Wage Offer Washington, July 9--(AP) --The wage dispute which threatened a country-wide trike and caused United States Government seizure of the railroads was settled peace- ably late Thursday. The settlement was announced by the White House. Representatives of management and the three rail- road brotherhoods which called the strike adjusted their differences in a series of conferences there ar- ranged by John Steelman, presid- ential assistant. The engineers, firemen and switchmen accepted a wage in- crease of 15% cents an hour, retro- active to last Nov. 1, plus several changes in operating rules, scme of which will increase the railroad- men's take-home pay. Railroad management represent- atives, said the settlement was vir- tually the same as that recommen- ded by the President's emergency board March 27. The settlement means that the railroads will be turned back to private management as soon as ne- cessary papers can be drawn up. Steelman estimated that that could be dgne in "a day or two." Nominally, the railroads have been under government control since May 10, with Army Secretary Kenneth Royall directing their op- erations. The government got an injunction against the threatened strike. Numerous efforts # TODAY Biltmore -- "Last of the Red- men" -- 1.00, 3.33, 5.53, 8.26, 10.46. "Ginger" -- 2.15, 4.48, 7.08, 9.41.
