The roast beef before the man beside her made her look with distaste at the sand- wich she had ordered. "No wonder you're nervous, if that's all you eat," the man re- marked. "What you need is a bowl of hot soup," he continued, ignoring her silence. "That would relax you." "Thanks, doctor," she said shortly. "I know what I want." "How did you know that I'm a doctor." "That was just a figure of speech. Are. you really?" 'I am, indeed. Dr. Stephen Carter." "Then your interest is aca- demic. You're not trying to--" "Pick you up? Heaven forbid. I thought you were nervous, the way you kept fidgeting." "Well, I'm not," she answered sharply, 'so your solicitude is wasted." When she paid the cashier, he was beisde her. "I thought your interest was academic," she said, coldly, as he fell into step. "It is. I keep wondering what you're like under your shell." "Oh, for pity's sake," she said angrily, "What city disowned you?" "Toledo," he grinned, "and they didn't disown me. I am a prom- ising young doctor there." "That accounts for it. Country doctor comes to big city, talks to show-girl and brags about it." "Country doctor," he chuckled. "But we're really quite modern. We've electric lights, even the movies. What did you have for breakfast? I'd say a cup of black coffee. How about dinner with me? We could have a steak." "Please," she interrupted. "Talk about something else." "How about Toledo? Quite a place. Zoo, hospitals, university, museum. It's your turn." "Me? Well, I came here five years ago. Winner in a beauty contest. Expected to find agents fighting over me, So far, I have not got beyond the chorus. At present I'm 'resting'." "Look," he said. "I'll be here a week. Days will be meetings, but my evenings are free. How about showing-me New York. We could start with dinner." "No strings attached?" "No strings, cross my heart. But I'd like to know your name." "Doris Gardner." "Miss . Gardner, your start at seven, tonight." "You look much better than you did, the last time we were in here," Stephen said, as, the week over, they perched on the stools where they met. "Here we met and here we say duties good- -bye," she said flippantly. 'When does your train leave?" "Midnight." "I'll think of you drinking my black coffee." "Why not come with me? Life in Toledo isn't bad. Besides, I love you, the girl who tries so hard. If you can't stand it, well, trains runs both ways." "There's one thing you forget," she said. "Do I love you?" "That's important," he agreed. "I was afraid to ask. Do you?" "I don't" know if it's you, or the security you represent," she said frankly. "I'm willing to take a chance." He grinned. Doris danced home happily. "Lucky, lucky me--" The. landlady's knock inter« rupted her. "Here's a message," she said. "I hope it's a job and you'll be paying some rent--" Doris dialed Stephen's hotel. 'Dh, Stephen," she "exclaimed. "It's come! The chance I've wait. cd for!" "I see." flat. "Then here."
