The International Peace En- campment held in this town across the Niagara River from Buffalo, N.Y., was advised in the final speech of the meeting that a just peace | could not be attained at the price of loss of freedom. Maj.-Gen. Arthur E. Potts of Ot- tawa declared: "We are not willing to accept peace at any price, to accept a peace which means giving up our- liberties and the individual freedom which is our heritage. "That is what we fought for in two wars; that is what so far we have been able to keep... "We almost get tired of listening to speakers tell of our undefended frontier. "Yet here, we have something very precious, something which makes possible the close under- standing between those of us who are close neighbors." The veterans worked through a full program that ranged from a solemn drumhead service to selec- tion of a Miss Encampment, and included a contest to name a masked "Miss" who turned out to be a missus. The delegates pledged support to both the U.S. and Canadian govern- ments in presenting to the world" " a united front in the interest of permanent peace." Admiral H. Kent Hewitt of New York observed in his address that close contact © among various branches of the armed forces. led to mutual respect and understand- ing.
