Committee Lauds Action on Housing Montreal, Aug. 16--(CP)--Nation- al Liberal party endorsement of a ton of Mayors and MuncpalS,B2T-F national low-rent housing policy was a victory for the Canadian Fed- eration of Mayors and Municipali- ties, J. O. Asselin, chairman of Mon- treals Executive Committee, stated Saturday. In a statement issued in his capa- city as chairman of the Federations National Housing Committee, Mr. Asselin said the endorsement at the National Liberal convention was "the result of the federations three- year effort to persuade the govern- ment to adopt just such a policy." The government had always turn- ed "thumbs down" on the federa- tion's low-rent proposals, he said, and it was "gratifying to learn the rank and file of Liberal support throughout the country = thinks otherwise." "Nobody knows how many post- poned marriages there are because of the lack of moderately prices housing," Mr. Asselin said. "In Mon- treal alone there must be several thousand." Banbury, Oxfordshire, England -- (CP)--Mr. and Mrs. William Ever- ett have started a mobile hair- dressing salon, carrying the coun- try housewife's perm to her door. They have nearly a dozen villages on their visiting list. Business Spotlight By The Canadian Press Announcement of the discovery of titanium ore in Eastern Quebec is the latest illustration of why many believe Canada is just at the dawn of her industypial greatness, From Labrador to the Yukon her frontiers are are being pushed back in the search for minerals at a nace which would have been difficult to envisage a few years ago. And ii is being accompanied by expancion of ber means of production in figures that but recently would have sound- 2d astronomical. Watching this, observers ask if there are forces that will keep Can- ada's prosperity growing bey md the bounds of a post-war boom? Whe- ther she is becoming the storehouse for the continent in raw materials? and becoming perculiarly fi'ted to meet the requirements of a .cedy world. Many think the answer is in the affirmative in all cases, unless the trade of the world dries up. The titanium ore, from which a metal for high-grade alloys and pigments for paints if refined, is expected to lead to an ultimate de- velopment expenditure of $150,000,- 000. Sales Up The Bureau of Statistics reports department sales up in July over July of last year. For all Canada nine per cent; for Ontario three, Markets Saturday Chicago grains made minor gains Saturday, but Winnipeg wes easier. Security exchanges were closed. LONG-DISTANCE SURVEYOR A geophysicist is an oil research- er whose job it is to map the strata which lie thousands of feet below the surface of the earth, | | Crops in Ontario Progressing Well But Labor Needed Toronto, Aug. 16--(CP)--Ontario Agriculture Department statisticians now are working on estimates of the 1948 Ontario crop totals. with the harvest described by Agriculture Minister Kennedy as "a billion dollar crop." Prospects of bumper crops were general over the province, in cone trast to previous years when crops in some sections were "spotty." Grain yields will be high, fruits and vegetables are abundant and root crops were said progressing excep~ tionally well. Many farmers, however, were said to be finding it difficult to secure adequate harvest labor.
