"We have available 30,000 tons of high-grade tobacco from our 1946 and previous crops," Yalter said, "and Britain could have a further 45,000 tons from the total 1947 crop of about 100,000 tons." Turkish tobacco, however, is not popular in Britain. Teel By STUART UNDERHILL Canadian Press Staff Writer Britain is getting ready for an all-out recruiting campaign for its territorial army--its citizen soldiers who turn out for weekly drills and two weeks' annual carhp. Field Marshal Viscount Mont- gomery, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, says that without these men there could be no na- tional army and no national secur- ity. Full-dress recruiting begins in mid-October. The object is to raise the territorial ' army's present strength of 50,000 to 150,000. Urgent Need The need of building up the ter- ritorials has become more urgent due to the slump in recruiting for the regular army. Despite conscrip- tion for 18-year-olds, the intake is said to be running about 20,000 be- hind the figures necessary for a trained force of 200,000 by next spring. The War Office plans call for the territorials as a well-trained force to be ready to step into any defen- sive breach alongside the regular army. The territorials attend 30 drills yearly and are trained to handle modern weapons and think along the lines of modern warfare. "Every man and woman in Brit- ain should understand that if the territorial army fails, their homes, their freedom and their way of life would be in the gravest danger if we were attacked," Lord Montgom- ery said in an address at Black- pool. "Exercise Britannia" He is anxious to get the territor- ials built up in time for the regu- lar army's annual war manoeuvre which next year will be "Exercise Britannia." Last year it was "Ex- ercise Bamboo" and dealt with a hypothetical far-eastern problem. "Exercise Britannia" will cover the whole question of civil defence in Britain in the atomic age. Rep- resentatives from the dominions «and from British cities which were badly bombed in the war will be invited to attend. Lord Montgomery told service chiefs, at a recent conference, that their job is "to try to evolve a civil defence doctrine. and technique which will link the civil organiza- tion with the military one in this great matter of defence. We can not have two things in watertight com- partments." The territorials will draw pay while on duty and also other con- cessions. Tuna Fishers Hunt For Marine "Gold" Vancouver -- (CP) Modern fortune-hunters, uisng boats instead of donkeys, are staking out a new trial leading to marine "gold." The location of the strike is the Strait of Juan de Fuca and beyond, and already sea-going miners are reporting fabulous finds. The gold is the scaly, fin-tailed tuna, known to its stalkers as "chicken of the sea." The hunt lasts for a short three to four-week sea- son, and mariners must be skilled and tough to make the most of it. A new industry here, tuna fish- ing this year is expected to bring a catch of 500 tons or more. Selling at about $600 a ton, there is justi- fication for the marine "gold" nick- name, COMING! AUGUST 28 The fish themselves are to hook--they'll even strike at old rags --but landing them 'is a different matter, As one fisherman said: "Tuna fishing is no game for greenhorns." The "chicken" formally called ale bacore, range from 11 to 15 pounds, and put up a stiff fight. They are found many miles off the coast, in the open Pacific where the weather is unpredictable. About 20 boats now are in opera- tion from Vancouver, with many more expected soon. Victoria ree ports about 1,000 crews; mostly from United States ports, operating on the west side of Vancouver Island. Aware of the potentialities of the new industry, the Dominion fisher ies department sent out a vessel this year to locate moving tuna schools. The craft is equipped with radio to advise fishermen of tuna arrival. First haul of the season, landed at Victoria on July 16, tipped in at 5,584 pounds, TODAY! NOT WHEN YOU HAVE!
