Editor: Robert Corbett, phone 2589 Phone 703. All Departmy | pump Power Cuts Necessary © Here Next Week Whitby is on the threshold reshold oto electric power shut-offs similar to those experienced by other Ontario towns last Year unless the utmost public co-operation in saving power is exercised. Meeting last night, the Whitby Public Utility Commission considered the local situation. demand is greater than last year. Local power In the month of August Just passed (when the load is normally at a low point) there were 678 kws. used daily as compared with 633 in 1947. Average Cut 20% Average daily use here in Agu was 22,350 kw.h. whereas the Ont- ario Hydro Commission has decreed that Whitby can only be supplied with 18,900 maximum per day start- ing next Tuesday. This means only one thing--that commercial and do- mestic users must pare their re- quirements to the bone, or else be left without power entirely. . Other factors enter the picture. At present the canning factory is a large user. After the corn is in there will be a saving there. Last year Whitby was saved from cut- offs by the closing down of a lumber mill. If this mill should begin using 'power in quantity again the situa- 'tion would be aggravated, However, local employment must be main- tained to the full and the public is agreed that this is the primary rea- son for power saving. The Whitby Electric department itself can go a considerable way in tir~ saving if its gas pump at the lake is utilized in place of the elec- tric pumps now in use. However this would add considerably to the cost of pumning town water, Serious Situation In offizia] information received WHITBY ELECTRIC Earl "Jake" Bryant by Superintendent Herb L. Pringle, it is pointed out that power de- mands would normally increase from now on. Later in the Fall, new Ontario power resources will be completed and be switched into the Ontario System but these may do ro more than counter-balance the | 1948 normal consumer increase. The quota is in effect Monday through Friday because industrial shut- downs over the week-end create a surplus at that time. Restrictions on commercial light- ing are similar to those of last year, the chief difference being that a litnited amount: of show window lighting will be permitted while store and office lighting must be reduced. Cut Street Lights In Whitby, it is believed that the street lighting will be partially cut Domesiic consumers must down or suffer the consequences". Chairman of the Commission, William Pringle said that he greatly 1egrets this action is necessary, but believes that there will be complete public co-operation in the present emergency. | "The daily average this week has been 24,240 kw.h.," he said.
