Dated at Oshawa, September 20, 1948. (Signed) H. A. CA LL | completed Toronto will | New Disposal Plant Aids Sewage Problem Toronto -- (CP) -- A new multi- | million-dollar sewage disposal plant on Toronto's eastern outskirts which will go into partial operation next year is expected toend many of the city's sewage troubles. For some time raw sewage has been emptied into Lake Ontario only a few miles from the intakes that supply the city with drinking water; the city's eastern beaches have not been free from pollution for more than 20 years; and un- covered sludge beds have made life hard for. citizens when an east wind blows. Originally scheduled for com- pletion in three years, the first two stages in constructing the . huge plant took six years. It took 36 months to build a pair of sluice gates, and even yale locks couldn't | be delivered for 16 months. But when the present units are have a partial-treatment plant that is more | effective than the existing plant, in use since March, 1913. The old sewage plant has a cae pacity of some 33,000,000 gallons a day, and in recent years has been called upon to handle from %0,- 000,000 to 90,000,000 gallons a day. Much of the sewage was dumped, untreated, into the lake. First 'step ni building the new plant was a huge 1,350-foot pro- tecting sea-wall. Then six -sedi- mentation tanks--huge vaults 22 feet high and capable of holding several million gallons of sewage-- were built. 5 Sludge is carried from these to big digestion tanks, holding 1,250, 000 gallons each, where sewage is made harmless, chlorinated, and then emptied into the lake through a 3,300-foot pipe laid along the bed of the lake. Still to be built is a conduit 1,362 feet long which will convey all sewage from the old disposal plant to a chlorinating and grit re= moval building, ye'. to be cone structed. 100 CENTS FOR 1 SCENT . Skunk oil sells in Massachusetts for $100 per ounce. It seems an unfair swap: One hundred cents for one scent. Part-Time HELP WANTED! Male or Female - APPLY -
