The premiere broadcast last Sunday at 7:00 p.m. marked the beginning of Benny's 16th year in radio and on the NBC network. The time between last season's doleful rendition of "Love in Bloom" and this Fall's familiar opener, "Hello, again, this is Jack Benny," was spent by Benny pre- sumably at ease on foreign shores. But rest, like home, is what you make it. For Benny's vacation was spent entertaining the millions abroad who clamored to hear him. Before Jack, his wife, Mary Liv- ingstone; Phil Harris and song- stress Marilyn Maxwell sailed for Europe, he and the troupe broke attendance records in Detroit and Cleveland theaters. . When they reached England, a two-week en- gagement at the famous Palladium brought them one of the greatest ovations ever accorded performers in London. The story of "standing room only" and "shattered attend- ance records" was repeated. Benny and the gang then went on to Germany to give shows for enthusiastic American GIs sta- tioned in cities from Frankfurt to Munich. During the performances in Germany, Alice Faye, who ac- companied her husband, Phil Har- ris, abroad, also participated. Farmer Snares Pesky Wolves North Bay, Ont.--(CP)--He brings 'em back alive--with his bare hands: Oza Mayer, of Mattawa, 40 miles east of here, is rapidly making a Right now his barn houses trhee wild wolves. They're chained to dif- ferent corners of the building. Oza's wolf-taming began almost accidentally. When 20 pigs and two sows were mutilated at Hawkesbury farm, near Snake Creek, he resolved | to set snares for the wolves. But | when they attacked a horse and gorged themselves on a hind quar- ter, leaving the animal to bleed to death, he really went into action. Already he's snared three of the | beasts. And with wrestling and | managed to bring | them back to his home. i The future of the animals is in doubt. The Mayers would like an opportunity to exhibit: them but tempting offers for their sale have been received. Oza's friends feel he has more courage than wisdom in keeping the animals alive at his home. But the game is beginning to have a fas- cination for him and his strange collection is growing. The dour radio comedian has agreed "in self-defence" to bond his listeners up to $5,000 against the loss of any prize they might win by listening to some other program. i Allen says "give-away" pro-| grams "are ruining incentive tor | individual talent in radio." Almost at the same time that Allen was starting his campaign Sunday night, Kenneth Crosbie, a Bluffton, Ind. beer salesman, was winning $30,000 in prizes from an- other show -- ABC's "Stop the Music." Crosbie was sitting at home listening to the program when his telephone rang. He correctly iden- tified a "mystery tune" as "Turk- | eys in the Treetops" and was od he had hit the jackpot. To start the public 1aghig,| Allen announced the award of | these mythical prizes on 'his NBC | program: A genuine television set; and a saloon and bartender to go with it; 4,000 yards of - dental floss, prac-| tically new; the gangplank of the liner Queen Mary; 800 pounds of putty for every member of the family; two floors of the Empire State Building; and 12 miles of railroad track and a roundhouse | completely furnished. Allen, who said there are so programs "giving away things" that many people have stopped tuning in comedians, an- nounced that the National Surety Corporation will guarantee his promise to reimburse his listeners. After he had lampooned "give- away" programs by a take-off of a quiz-master telephoning to lucky listeners, Allen told a reporter that "these give-away programs are not i AF {Otter he} 1S ten iCI | On The Air || Allen Flays 'Give-Aways'; rs $5,000 entertainment -- just cheap 10th tery."
