PAGE FOURTEEN THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1848 New Institute Sets High Standard For A rising standard cf efficiency in all auto maintenance work is the . object of the Garage Mechanics . Apprentice Course opened recently at the Ryerson Institute of Tech- nology, Toronto. Since the war and its unprecedented demand for uniformly well-trained mechanics, © the Garage Operators' Association 7 of Ontario has been actively en- gaged in 2 search for methods which will assure up-to-date effici- ciency. In co-operation with both provincial and dominion govern- ments, the association set up ma-. chinery for an intensified course of training which is available to all apprentice mechanics. At the pre- sent time," it is understood, the course is the only one of its kind, not only in Canada, but in the whole of North America. The new system of apprenticeship in Ontario which began in 1937 re- quired mechanics to have five years experience in the business at the end of which time they were asked to pass an examination which led to a full-fledged auto mechanic's diploma. Following that came the demand for certification of appren- Mechanics tices. However, this system was purely voluntary and many in the trade ignored if. In 1944 the provincial government decreed that all mechanics must have certificates and to get such a certificate it was necessary to prove that five years had been spent in the trade. There was no examina- tion, and the training received under such a system was seldom complete since few garages have full training facilities. It was felt that opportunities should be provided for training, in all branches of the trade, for each and every individual undergoing training. The present course provides such training for apprentice mechanics in that prov- ince. It is divided into two cate- gories, a basic course of three months to be taken in the appren- tices' second year and an advance course of nine weeks in the fourth year which is terminated with a comprehensive examination. For those who enter the trade with technical school training, the basic course is shortened to nine weeks. This may be shortened to Corner PRINCE & BOND ST. The advance course teaches fin- ished theory and will be a fluid course which may change with ad- vances in practice and knowledge. It attempts to teach the individual all those aspects of the trade which his employer usually ignores. On completion of this course the ap- prentice will be given a certificate and be known as a junior mecha- nic. Only after he has another year of experience in putting into prac- tice the theory that the advance course makes available, will he become a full-fledged mechanic. The course is being financed on a 50-50 basis by the dominion and provincial governments which will give all out-of-town apprentices at- tending the instifute a $14 per week living allowance as well as provid- ing a medical check-up and a list of government approved boarding houses. The: department of education staffs and administers the institute while the department of appren- ticeships determines who shail at- tend. Head of the institute is H. H. Kerr, while George Ingles is chief instructor for the motor mechanics course. Threshing Of Buckwheat Keeps Enfield Busy MRS.
