Resources Department engineers, overcoming sub-Arctic difficulties and hazards, have harnessed a new source of power for develop- ment of the rich mining lodes in the Yellowknife area of the North- west Territories. It is the Snare River storage and | power project, launched by the de- { partment in 1946 and now spilling out 8350 horsepower from the j tumbling Snare River just - 200 | miles south of the Arctic Circle. 5 | The project was opened officially ct. | As nsdn hydro projects go, | the Snare River job doesn't bulk :large; it turns out about enough energy for a town of 5,000 or 6,000. But its completion in the face of | major obstacles represents an ime | portant page in the story of man's | mastery of the north, It is the most northerly power | development of its size on the con= | tine nt. And it was put into proe | duction only after a long and care- | fully-planned campaign against the ©) tricky northern seasons, which fought the engineers at every turn. Because of the short navigation season on northern rivers, trans- i portation was the major obstaclz, | The builders utilized everything including Larges, planes and sleds | to get their 2,400 tons of material i and equipment to the power site. In the summer of 1947, part of the gear was moved by water. From | the railhead at Waterways, Alta. [it was floated down the Athabaska, {| River, toted over a 12-mile por- | tage to the Slave River and down | the Slave to Great Slave Lake. It was ferricd acress the lake to as- sembly points for winter haulage to the damsite. Because of pressure ridges and gaps ia the ice, a lake haul during ) the winter was a ticklish job. Trac- ) | tor trains made the haul, precedad | by scouting snowmobiles testing the ice. The route was inspected daily by a small plane. One tractor broke through and sank in 24 feet of water, but its driver escaped with the rest of the train. The tractor was recovered later. That was the only mishap { in the hauling of $500,000 worth of | material across the ice.® Power from the project now is going to the Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Ltd, so far the only | actual consumer, but by next sum- | mer it will be piped to the town of { Yellowknife near that mining site 94 miles south of the Snare River site, A town of about 3,000, Yellow= knife now gets its power from its old Diesel plant and from Con- solidated Mining 'and Smelting Company. The Snare River horse- ! power will enable the townsfolk to indulge in such luxuries as elec tric stoves. Poor Diet Cause Of Tooth Decay Edmonton -- (CP) -- - Civilization may be good for some people, but for Canada's Eskimos it spells only trouble--dental variety. Dr. R. J. Tickle, Australian den- tist who has spent his summers since 1940 travelling in the Canadian arc- tic, says Eskimos are living on a restricted diet which plays hob With their teeth because many of the natural game animals are protected. Instead of fatty foods and meat, they are eating more and more pro- teins and carbohydrates with a high sugar content. Such a diet causes a "complete breakdown" of the Es- member of the University of To- ronto, has travelled from Aklavik to Hudson's Bay filling cavaties and doing extractions for the . Eskimo population. This summer he spent at the An- glican mission in Aklavik "catching |up with the year's decays." There {i$ no resident dentist at the far northern town so he has his work [cut out for him to attend as many of the natives in the Mackenzie Say region as possible. "Inherently the Eskimo have ex= cellent teeth, not subject to decay. However, marked deterioration of their teeth is now evident." He said the Dominion government is becoming more health conscious about its wards, the Eskimos, and is considering adding dental care to the large-scale medical services. must go han din hand with fre- quent dental care for healthy teeth.
