' THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE NINETEEN THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1948 King To End Record Term Next Monday Ottawa, Nov, 11--(CP)--The re- cord-breaking term 'of Rt. Hon. William Lyon McKenzie King as Prime Minister of Canada ends next Monday, Nov. 15. On that day, after 21 years, five months and eight days in office, he will tender his resignation to the Governor-General and quietly retire. His successor will be Rt. J Hon. Louis St. Laurent, the new Liberal leader. The 73-year-old Prime Minister made the long-expected announce ment of the retirement date Wed- nesday in a letter expressing regret at his inability, due to illness, to attend the opening luncheon of the annual meeting of the dominion executive council of the.Canadian Legion. He addressed the letter to Lt.- Col.. L. 'D. -'M. Baxter,. Dominion president of the Legion, and said he was "happy" to take the privi- lege of making the retirement an- nouncement through the Legion. He had hoped, he went on, to associate his retirement with Re- membrance Day today, by retiring immediately after placing the gov- ernment's wreath at the base of the National War Memorial here in the official Remembrance Day ce- remony. However, the illness which had PRESCRIPTIONS Quickly and Accurately Filled --- Al - MITCHELL'S DRUG STORE 9 Simcoe N. The retirement ceremony is ex- pected to be simple. Once the resignation is accepted, the Governor-General is expected to call upon Mr. St. Laurent, elect- ed to succeed Mr. King as Liberal leader at the party convention this summer, to form a new government as head of the majority party in. the Commons. Mr. St. Laurent then probably will announce the members of his administration. The expectation is that the cabidet line-up will re- main virtually unchanged, except for the possible addition of Premier Garson of Manitoba as Justic Min- ister. 3 There may be one other addition. Robert, Winters, Parliamentary as sistant to Tran Minister Che- vrier and Liberal Member of Par- liament for the Nova Scotia riding of Queens-Lunenburg, has been mentioned as a cabinet prospect, Some portfolios may be reshuffled to give him a post. Following his retirement Mr. King, should his health continue to im- prove, likely will remain in Parlia- ment as the private member for Glengarry, the small Ontario riding which elected him following his de- feat in Prince Albert, in Saskatch- ewan, in the 1941 general eléction.
