PAGE TEN THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1948 By DON HOULDEN By DON HOULDEN Uniformity The pleasant surprise that every- one is getting when they behold Oshawa's Scout Troops is increas- ing as they notice the new, trim uniforms being smartly worn by the members of Oshawa Scouting. Nothing stands out like a sore thumb as a poorly dressed Scout in a poorly dressed Troop. Note the difference when the reverse is ob- served. Needless to say, this all goes back to an increasing bride in per- sonal appearance by the boy, and an increasing loyalty to Troop and personal pride of the Scoutmaster. Cubs do not have to be pushed into getting uniforms, for their indivi- dual pride is at the busting stage, but sometimes their older brothers have to be coaxed. I have never yet heard of a sloppily dressed Troop being a proficient Troop. Did you know in Germany, where . Scouts are not allowed to wear uniforms, their desire to get into Scout Uni- form has given them to sufficient audacity to petition the Allied Council for permission to use Group neckerchiefs. This petition has been granted, as also has the permission | for small Troop and Patrol Flags. German Scouting will progress far more democratically if their group | pride and the words of B-P, com- | bined with a democratic fare find fertile soil upon whieh to grow. The Mothers' Executive Council Uhbeknown to many outsiders in Scouting, one of the finest Groups in the Association here is the Mothers' Executive Council, the wardens of the kitchens at both Shebandowan, Camp Samac and at the Scout Headquarters, Their's is the most important job of all, that of preparing, designing and serving excellent banquets at the many occasions that grace the Scout year. Mrs. Wm. Corbett and her hard- working group are always working for the best in Scouting, and it is a tribute to them that Oshawa Scouting is showing a decided im- provement, for the immeasurable assistances to Scouting - that they give are worthy of our heartiest "thanks." Christmas Carols and Cards For many Troops this is just an- other year in making money for the Troop and Packs or Group through Christmas Cards. This is a splendid way of selling, for it com- bines service with profit. Christmas Carols is a measure also of provid- ing the people with something that they want, butgat mo profit ma- terially, How's about some Christ mas Carollers this year from our Scout community! 14TH OSHAWA WOLF CUB PACK Surprise! Here's the beginning of | the 14th's news for this season. I bet you wondered what happened to | us. Well, we hope to tell you all of our news and nonsense from now on. Akela had to attend a district | Scouters' meeting so Rikki and Ba- | loo took over with the help of the | three Scouts (Cub instructors). Grand Howl opened our meeting, followed by inspection. Come on, | Cubs, see of your uniforms can look | as smart as those Scouts. | Rikki took the Cubs in a game, "The Thief and the Farmer." Then | the Scouts came forward with a | snappy relay game, Instruction followed with every- one hard at work. The following presentations were | made: Donald Hubbard and Paul Poray- ko received their 1st Star. Good | work, fellows." Remember you can | wear two proficiency badges with | one star. This is an action- packed screen version of the David Goodis novel of the same name, which has been directed by Delmer Daves. Daves is also responsible for the een play, making this a double-scoring chore for him In support of the leading duo are Agnes Moorehead, Bruce Bennett end Tom D'Andrea. Clifton Young and Rory Mallinson round out the ros ter of supporting players. Miss Bac signment is a more sympath than usual, as she depicts a ser minded young lady here, instead of the sultry enchantress, Bogart is cast as an escaped convict from San Quentin who tries to prove his innocence. All of this is shot in and near San Francisco, where the company spent a month shooting ex- The Golden Gate Bridge fig- this engi- | neering structure to motivate the more exciting moments in the picture. One of the standout scenes is a slugfest be- tween Bogart and Young beneath the | J bridge. Music in the production is by Franz Waxman, with "Too Marvellous for Words" revived as a running theme song. Added Hit For extra enjoyment the Biltmore management has booked 'Joe Palooka in Fighting Mad" to round out an ex- cellent double program. Taken from the celebrated comic strip by Ham Fisher, highest paid cartoonist in the | business, theatre-goers always look for- ward to these character features. "Joe Palooka in Fighting Mad" is one of the best and no doubt will draw favorable comment from those who visit . the | Odeon-Biltmore either Monday or Tucs- gay of next week. { Goncing the new Record Store 25 Prince Street SPECIAL Introductory Offer!
