) -; » h TUESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1948. > Fi THE DAILY TIMES:GAZETTE a PAGE FIFTEEN New Types Of Weed Killers Are Developed Since the discovery of the re- markable selective weedkiller 2,4-D, a host of new chemicals have been developed which are claimed to be superior to 24-D in specific appli- cations, it was reported at the sec- ond Western Canadian Weed Con- trol Conference held recemtly in Winnipeg. Notable among these are HE-1 and H.E-2, both of which resulted in a 96 per cent control of poison ivy. IAE-3 also gave a good kill of weeds In flax when used at 1% to 3 ounces per acre, without stunting the flax. These herbicides are new estérs of 2,4-D. Another new weedkiller, 245-T, is 'a compound closely related to 24-D 'and developed for control of certain plant species, such as black- berry, resistant to 2,4-D. A growth substance type af herbi- cide--2 methyl 4 chlorophenoxya- cetic acld--is receiving some atten- tion because it seems less toxic to flax than 24-D. Sodium trichloracetate has been formulated for control of grasses. This water-soluble salt shows pro- mise in the eradication of couch grass and the suppression of grass- es in ditches and along fence rows. Oil emulsions of pentachloro- phenol were reported to have given good control of weeds through con- t action. The sodium salt of this corhpolnd as well as the ammonium salt of dinitro-o"sec-butylphenol showed promise when used as a'pre- emergénce residual soil treatment. Such crops as peas and beans which are planted relatively deep, have emérged without injury where mod- erate amounts of thése chemicals were applied immediately after planting, 5 Delegates at the conference were warned that while some of these new weedkillers may be used next year, many detail of their use must yet be investigated before general recommendations can be made. Veterinarians' Role In Animal Husbandry If it were not for veterinarians, Canadians might have little meat to eat, few horses for farming and no pefs for company, This claim was-made in an article in the current issue of C-I-L Oval which described various animal dis- eases which, if not checked by ani- mal doctors, would soon decimate the population of our four-footed friends. The article describes blackleg as something like gangrene in hu- mans, While it is a disease for which ghere is no reasonable cure,. it can be prevented by vaccination. The dreaded brucellosis (Bangs dis- ease or contagious abortion) spreads like wildfire and cannot be cured. Another common disease is milk fever, results of calcium deficiency. Veterinarians today cure 99 per cent of such cases. Acute cases which occur after a cow has calved are given intravenous injections of calcium, The effect is almost mir- Aculous--a cure often ' within 20 minutes, A new threat to poultry--New- castle disease--broke out last spring for the first time in- Canada in three pr , Within two menths it was wiped out by veterinarians of the health and animal division of the Dominion Department of Agri- culture who quarantined premises, slaughtered several thousand af- fected birds, cleaned and disinfect- ed. The Oval article states that dogs fall prey to almost every disease common to humans. Although they do not have appendicitis or gall- stones because of the structure, of their internal organs, they do get stomach ulcers usually caused by being away from their owners. Modern + animal' hospitals are equipped almost as complétely as; those for humans. Some even have nurses and internés. Facilities in- clude «every diagnostic feature of human medical treatment and near- ly every drug called for in human pharmacy. AUSTRALIA'S FUTURE Canberra -- (CP) -- Prof. Grif- fith Taylor of the University of Toronto, after a recent tour of South-east Australia, said that is where Australia's future lies and not. in the centre or northern part of the continent. He said, "Blocks under irrigation in the south-east will produce more than the whole of the interior." 1; Inch Fir Ply ERNIE CAY LUMBER 4 bus. All you do is 34 cost of the C. C. M.
