Barrymore Acts Scrooge For 13th Time Lionel Barrymore, .whose per- formance as Old Scrooge in Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" has become a classic of radio enter- tainment, will give his thirteenth annual performance of the play on Saturday, Dec. 25, from 4;00 to 6:00 pm., EST. The tradition which makes the Dickens tale a time-honored item of radio holiday entertainment dates back to 1930, when a radio version was first ° presented by Georgia Backus and Alexander Woollcott, who repeated the offer- ing in 1931, 1932 and 1933. Mr. Barrymore's first perform- ance was given on Christmas Day, 1934. He has repeated it annually except in 1936 and 1938. His absence from the 1936 broad- cast was caused by his wife's tra- gic death on Christmas Eve. Lion- el Barrymore's role in that per- formance was played, without re- brother, John. In the 1938 broadcast, Mr. Barry- more read the introduction but his accustomed role was played by Or- son Welles. In all, the widely beloved delin- eator of crochety old characters has been associated with radio's "A Christmas Carol" tradition for 15 years.
