™ 10 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Mondsy, January 19, 1858 Oshawa Generals came through in fine style on Saturday night with a 9-2 victory over St. Catharines Teepees. It was a great night at the Oshawa Arena. Rexie Stimers was on hand from St. Kitts along with Jack Gatecliff and the way the Generals disposed of the Teepees drew grudging praise from "The Voice" but the facts were evident. Carlo "Monty" Montemurro celebrated his birthday with a goal. The Generals Booster Club put on a "surprise party" for "Monty" and this nice gesture was thoroughly appreciated both by the player and the team in general. The attendance was bigger on Saturday night and if the Generals keep up their winning ways, the turnstiles will soon be clicking as of a decade ago. Bobby Attersley scored two goals and three assists on Saturday night and if Fred Etcher and Rick Collin had clicked on only half of the chances Attersley gave them with perfect set-up passes, he would have had as many more points, The little centre is going great guns now and is headed for the top of the Junior "A" scoring race, at the present pace. Jack Armstrong has been in a slump for about three full weeks--he came out of it with a loud bang. He scored three for the Generals in the 3rd period, first "hat trick" by a local player for quite' a while, on home ice--and it earned "Army" a new hat and a new shirt, compliments of Stetson Hat Co. (via Kinloch's) and Dunn's Tailors, respectively. *, * + Generals' 3rd win in three starts last week, tightened their grip on 6th place in the standing. Guelph Biltmores dropped the game to Galt Black Hawks on Saturday night in Galt and that kept the Bilts down in 7th spot. Windsor Spitfires bowed to St. Mike's yesterday afternoon 5-2 and Marlboros won 8-5 over Three Rivers. Barrie beat Kitchener-Waterloo Greenshirts on Saturday night also. CLIMAX SUCCESSFUL WEEK Generals Smother Teepees 9-2, 3rd-Straight Win Holds 6th Place Oshawa Generals climaxed a very successful week in the OHA Junior "A" schedule, when they chalked up their third-straight vie- tory here on Saturday night, de- feating the St. Catharines Teepees 9-2 and impressing a large crowd of fans who voiced their appreci- tion of the Generals' effort in no uncertain manner. . It was a great night for the Generals, as a te and indivi- dually. The win, their third this past week, consolidated their grip on 6th place in the standing but more than that, the brand of hockey the Generals displayed was an indication that they can be ex- pected to win a lot more games before the schedule is over. | ATTERSLEY, ARMSTRONG AND "MONTY" Bobby Attersley, who is setting a sizzling scoring pace to lead the team in recent weeks, added five more points to his total with two goals and three assists while Jack Armstrong, who has been in a bad slump for three weeks snapped out of it in the 3rd period by scoring three Oshawa goals, two of them unassisted. "Monty" Montemurro also shar- ed the limelight. He was "the guest of honor" at a thoughtful surprise presentation made by the Generals Booster Club, who put on a brief birthday party for "Monty", complete with birthday cake and a gift. The young de- St. Kitts and Windsor, with only 36 games played as against 40 by Oshawa and most of the other teams, still have a great chance to move up in the standing but Teepees will catch up a few games 1an showed his appreciation by scoring Oshawa's 6th goal of the night--and the fans gave him a tr ds ovation, as they this week--on their jaunt to Queb Windsor plays a doublehead against Marlies on Wednesday night. Osh G go to Galt on Tuesday night and that would be another great game to win, A victory tomorrow night would really protect Oshawa's grip on 6th place. They get a chance to rest on Friday night--and then they tackle St. Mike's here at Oshawa Arena this Saturday night. Next week the Generals really face an acid test with a raft of tough games. * + * A successful one-day bonspiel was held at the Oshawa Curling Club on Saturday. It was unique in that they had a full entry-list, despite the fact that the 5-day bonspiel had just been concluded. Three rinks from Brampton entered and all went home with prizes. So did a rink from Orillia and one from Peterborough. Five other sets of prizes stayed in Oshawa. Bobby Walker's schoolboy rink won the first section on Saturday with three wins and a score of 21. Les Eveniss and his rink of regulars won the second section. This is the 3rd or fourth bonspiel triumph for Eveniss and his men, already this season. Bryce Cook, very efficient lead for Skip Eveniss, laughingly admits that he's not going to pay his dues until he has won enough prizes to "break even"-- and he probably hasn't far to go either. Ontario Tankard and District Cup play goes on here tomorrow and in the meantime, club games are scheduled for the other nights of this week, with Saturday reserved for the Ontario Schoolboy championships. The public, and of course ourling club members especially, are cordially invited to attend Satur- day's championship play. * * BRIGHT BITS: --Oshawa"s all-out bid to get a berth in the Inter- county Baseball League, will "hang" now until the next meeting on Feb. 1 in Brantford. Pres. John Harris made a real plea yesterday at their meeting there but the I-C teams were not prepared to give a definite answer. The reason--wasn't given--we think is that they are waiting to see if they have enough teams entered without Oshawa. If one or two more drop out--then Merchants will be accepted! . . . Stratford now is one point up on Owen Sound Mercurys and 10 points ahead of the thirdeplace Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen. Saturday night Stratford defeated Kitchener 4-3, A fluke shot that bounced into the net off the skate of Stratford forward George Ait- ken made the difference. Owen Sound might have main- tained their one-point lead had it not been for the brilliant work of Dick Piatowski who claimed his third shutout of the season as Chatham Maroons whitewashed the Mercurys 3-0. Piatowski made 38 saves, Sarnia Sailors tightened their hold on fifth place by downing Hamilton Tigers 6-1. North Bay Trappers split two games in the Northern Ontario Hockey Association Senior southern group during the week-end. Satur- day night Sault Ste. Marie (Ont.) Greyhounds took a decisive 6-3 win from the Trappers who bounced back Sunday to defeat Sault Ste. Marie (Mich), Indians 6-2. Besides the Aitken fluke in Kit- chener, the flashy forward scored another goal and Ken Schultz and Billy Flick made the total four. Charlie Brooker, Al Buchanan and Harvey Jacklin tallied for Kitch- ener. Ed Didone and Jim Campbell gave the Maroons a quick lead in lead the second-place Barrie Fly- ers by 11 points. The Marlies picked up two points Sunday by defeating Three Rivers Reds 8-5. The Flyers' grip on second is far from firm with Toronto St. Michael's one point behind. The Flyers beat Kitchener - Waterloo Greenshirts 5-2 Saturday and St. Michael's trimmed Windsor 5-2 Sunday to keep the race close. The third-place battle involves Galt Black Hawks, who downed the rapidly-failing Guelph Bilt- mores 6-3 Saturday, and Oshawa Generals who maintained their tie with Galt Saturday by walloping St. Catharines Teepees 9-2. Montreal Royals forgot they were a cellar-dwelling club for long enough Sunday to trip Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in a Quebec Junior Amateur Hockey Association game. It was Three Rivers Reds' fourth straight loss in their current tour of interlocking schedule games. Wally Maxwell, Parker MacDonald and Gerry James each scored two for Marlboros. Single goals were by Jack Bionda and Louis Bendo. The Reds' Gendron, Norm Grise, Yvon Houle, Leon Michelin and Harvey Lalonde tallied a goal each. TAKE LEAD EARLY The Generals had swooped in on Goalie Marvin Edwards with eight seconds of the opening face- off and Bobby Attersley just fail- ed to score. About a minute later, Attersley and "Rick" Colin took the puck to goall-mouth and here Attersley fed it across to Fred Etcher. Three goals resulted from this pressure, from Etcher and Harry Sinden; Stan Parker scored on a pass from Bill Stewart and then Collin potted Attersley's pass midway through the frame to make it 4-0. The third period saw the game turn into a wide-open affair with both teams pouring on the at- tacking speed and not paying too much attention to defensive tac- tics. The visitors, trailing 4-0, were forced to start these tactics in a bid to get even and the alert homesters cashed in on their chances. Jack Armstrong got the first of his three goals early in the period. The Goodyears held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period, made it 3-1 with a lone tally in the second and after Oshawa made it close with a goal in the early minutes of the third for a 3-2 score. At the halfway mark in the last period, Kingston burst through the sagging Truckers and potted three unanswered goals to win 6-2. MacGregor and Murray with two goals apiece led the winners attack. Hooper and Scott got the Oshawa markers. Frank Hooper opened the scor- ing on a pass from Thaler in the first period, but Kingston quickly tied it when Teakess scored from Murray and Londry. MacGregor got the first of his two goals late in the frame from Myke and Watts to put the winners into a lead they never lost. Murray tallied the solo effort in the second period from Bob Markle.
