By ALLEN JACKS ROME (AP)--A shapely Italian | brunette with an improbable name {seems to be making the long leap toward U. 8. film stardom with | success. The meteoric rise of Gina Lollo- brigida (accent on the "bridge') as a European star has left even the bosomy Italian girl somewhat incredulous. Miss Lollobrigida -- that's her real name--is a five-foot, four-inch bundle of ambition with an hour- glass figure who has packed Euro- pean movie houses with almost every picture she has made. She just won & poll as Europe's top feminine draw. There are differences of opinion about the reasons for Gina's tre- mendous popularity, but most ex- porta on the subject credit her looks, especially her 36-inch bust and a trim 22-inch waist. Gina currently - is making her first American film, teamed with Errol Flynn, When she finishes she will start immediately on another, directed by John Huston, with Humphrey Bogart and Jennifer Jones as co-stars. Flynn himself is putting up 50 per cent of the capital for his film with the 24-year-old Italian beauty which will be released this all, Gina makes no effort to hide the delight with which she would re- ceive a good Hollywood offer but in the absence of same she is doing quite well here. She will receive 30,000,000 lire for her eight weeks work with Flynn. That's $48,000. 8he will do four or five other pictures this year for a total of $250,000 to $300,000. On this side of the Atlantic, where the tax collectors don't take their work too seriously, that's a bigger fortune than even Holly- wood can offer. Miss Lollobrigida literally fell in- to the gold mine. Italian director Mario Costa saw her at school in Rome one day and | { went offered her a small part in a pic- . That was in 1946, when Gina was 18. With her Italian reputation estab- lished, she was teamed with | French star Gerard Philippe and after the franc. Their pic- ture, '"Fanfan la Tulipe," took France by storm. The European version of a west- |ern, in an 18th century french set- ting, the film was full of action and Lollobrigida in low-necked gowns. Gina learned French passages well for '"Fanfan la Tulipe."" She is doing the same with English for her American debut. Not only,is Gina's income tre- mendous by European standards, but she has a very practical method of keeping it in the family. Her husband, Miko Skofic, a Yugo- slav who escaped a German con- centration camp to become a doc- tor in Italy, manages her affairs.
