§6 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Thursday, March 5, 1958 ! Rats Chase Ghosts Of First Government KINGSTON, Ont. (CP) -- Only rats now live in historic Simcoe House, birthplace of representative government in Upper Canada. Within the walls of the little white house, now strewn with rubble, Governor John Graves Sim- coe. of Upper Canada first met with his executive council in 1792; Many years later Kingston, city with a proud historic background, hailed Simcoe use as a shrine and took steps towards its preser- vation. . RECORDED ON PLAQUE A plaque was erected above the doorway now broken.and boarded. It read: . "In this house Governor John Graves Simcoe and his executive council met for the first time in 1792 and inaugurated representa- tive government for Upper Can- ada. "The house was moved to this site in 1935--its preservation has been made possible by E. Chown and Son Limited--Kingston Histor- ical Society -- Kingston Kiwanis ub," But today behind the plaque the Jooms of Simcoe House are lit- ed with cardboard cartons, old Tags and dirty papers. Sunlight streams through gaping cracks in the roof and the wind whistles through smashed windows. Harry Hollywood, in charge of the civic skating rink built beside Simcoe House, told a reporter of seeing rats 18 inches long about house. As he spoke, a teen-age girl looked in at the doorway and asked: "When are Jou going to tear this place down? If you "4 do it soon it will fall down." MOVED THREE TIMES But Simcoe House has an im- | spaces which have been filled with pressive history. R. A. Preston, secretary of the Kingston Histori- cal Society, says the house was one of three brought to Kingston from Carleton Island, at the head of the St. Lawrence river, in 1783. The island was a British base and an attack by United States forces was feared. In Kingston the house was occupied by the garrison com- mander. | In 1888 the building was moved again to a second site within the city and finally in 1935 it was roed to its present location--the former Kiwanis Square, a play- ground for children. Local historians are 'reasonably certain" that the executive coun- cil held its first meeting in Simcoe | hj House but one } family elaims ht the property where the first me ing was held was ht by one of their ancestors, Valliere. UNUSUAL CONSTRUCTION The old house has an ancient and unusual construction. Its beams or joists radiate like the struts in a barn, leaving open rubble and mortar for insulation. When the Kiwanis Club relin- quished its lease on the playground to an oil company, it agreed to undertake movement of the_house to a fourth site in Macdonald Park, near Murney Tower. High cost of the move has delayed the project but Kiwanis Club officials say that $1,500 hasbeen set aside for the task and-it will be attempted be- fore the me, Meanwhile Simcoe House stands empty and unattended. In one of the lower rooms--there are two on the ground floor and three on the second--a colored print of the Fathers of Confeder a tion lies trampled and torn in the dust.
