44 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Wednesday, March 18, 1958 NOTABLE FOR THIS SPRING Look to the ensemble for smart fashion versatility this Spring. A notable example is this four- piece costume in jersey, textured wool, and matching print for the blouse and lining. Telling the new story of slim- ness, accented with dramatic jacket interest, is this slender gray wool suit with petal' peplum, a newsy yellow gilet and flower. Slim Skirt Dominates Spring Season Scene "Slim and easy" is the predomine ating theme of the new Spring suits this season, with a wide range in interpretations of this so very flattering look. Skirts are unifor- mily slim, with all the fashion in- terest centered on the all-impor- tant jacket. Variations on this look include the box-jacket suit, with emphasis on the wider shoulder look, the fitted suit with longer jacket, the semi-fitted effect, inspired by the "Paris designers, and the practical three-piece "walking suit" ensem- ble. The box-jjacket suit makes news this Spring, being popular with every figure type because of its easy fit, and slenderizing effect when coupled with its reed-slim skirt, Many jjackets have a carved oval look, carried out with curving button and facing trim. The cardigan box-jacket intro- duces texture news in facings of self or knitted trim, braid, fringe, or tiny pin-tucking. And the cut-away, or tuxedo jacket often reveals a dyed-to-match wool jjersey, silk or cotton blouse as part of the cos- tume look. Shows Off Blouses 'The tailored suit, classic and flat- tering, is again important, is sheen gabardines especially; meticulously fitted to the body, the collarlecs and clean-lined open necklines in- vite the soft, pretty show of the new, feminine blouses. 'Custom tailoring" details, such as self bindings, precise pockets and slimming skirts add to the neat, -sphre line. Lightweight fabrics, in- "cluding the gabardines, tweeds, els, jerseys and synthetic blends, tailor beautifully, and their light, practical weight give the wearer more good use from season to season. Look for the longer jjacket line this Spring, both in boxy and fitted styles, Meldea over the hip and 'slightly eased at the waist this season's fitted jacket is a far cry from the man-tailored or the exaggerated ded styles of yes= terday. Cardigan necklines add to the over-all slim effect. The | slim, elongated silhouette centers too on the compromise between the box and the fitted Jacket, with both neckline and walstline qut slightly away from the figure. A miracle of fitting gives slenderness without the precise figure-hugging cut American wom- en have come to think necessary. Inspired by the Paris collection, this line has been successfully adapted here, and is one of the most pro- phetic of all silhouettes. * Tweeds for Spring Look for. the use of nubby boucles, soft fleeces, interesting mohair blends and softer tweeds. Harder suitings, such as worsted crepe, sheen gabardine and sharkskin pre- sent an equally exciting side of fashion news this season. And jer- in both fitted and boxy suits, and OSHAWA DAIRY HALF PINTS Cape. 19% Nowsmwide Feavarms Sym. sey is the big surprise of the year, traveling ensembles. Tweed, the standby for winter suits, puts on a new face for Spring wear. In a bubble-light weight, it lends itself beautifully to the exact- ing demands of the new suit tailor- ing, proving a boon for travelers and those who like year-round wear from their basic suits. Braid, fringe, and sharp white touches of linen accentuate the luscious fab- rics. Denim, rayon and rayon-synthe- tic blends as well as cotton and lin- en, make sturdy, fashionable "look like tweeds," flashed with jewel and embroidery accents that dress them up for town wear. Look for the new and improved use of synthetic fabrics in the new suits. Blends of dacron, orlon, acri- lan, viscose, vicara and rayon, used in conjunction wi*h wool and sil have an eleg: ook and a e properties of good travelers. The costume suit is a feminine version of the slim line for Spring. Right for every woman who leads a busy life, this fashion adapts it- self to day-into-evening wear, per- haps with a change of accessories. DIAMONDS TRUMPS In the realm of socks, diamond panels continue prominent in trad- itional ' afgyles and modern inter- pretations. They are shown in the usual two or three rows of dia- mond panes, although they may appear in one row only as in a band design. Many combinations of the new Spring colors are featured. Narrowness at Bottom With Emphasis on Wider Shoulder Now Prevails Fashion will follow the straight and narrow path this Spring, with countless variations of the 'slim look' carried out in coats, suits, dresses, ensembles and even eve- ning wear, Elegant and new-look- ing, the elongated line of Fashion calls for a whole new approach to the woman's wardrobe, as well as her important accessories. The very excitement of fash- jon is to be found in the word "change". Just as everything else in the woman's world is constantly in evolution, so is the conception of taste and style. The natural changes in fashion have always been worked around the triangle, the basis of all style. Just as the past years have brought the narrow-topped triangle, or py- ramid, into the fashion news, the latest and most exciting change is now that same triangle with the narrowness at the bottom. Emphasis is on the wider shoul- der line, narrowing to a confined hemline, stich as in the newest coats and suits. The shoulder ac- cent is achieved softly and subtly, with details such as the stole effect and easy draping rather than the bulky padded look. The wrap coat often has a suggestion of a cape at the shoulders, or dropped sleeves, while the skirt is very slim with not a trace of width, The boy suit, an extremely im- portant hion for Spring, also carries out the new line, with emphasis on the jacket rather than the skirt. While the new jack- ets are narrow and styled with a minimum of fitting at the waist, they offer a slightly wider and loos- er effect to offset the reed-slim skirt. SUITS IN VARIETY Suit jackets will be found in a multitude of styles, from the long and straight "walking suit" jacket to the abbreviated style that halts abruptly just above the waistline. Cut-aways and tuxedo styles offer a softer approach to the slim fash- ions, and make a pretty display of the new decorative weskits. Frothy, feminine blouses also will star as light touches under these suit fashions, especially with thé cardigan-styled jackets. The stole emerges as top fashion this Spring, either as a separate accesory, incorporated into the en- semble, or suggested by means of draping and stitching at the shoul- der. Seaming provides the bulk of fashion detail, criss - crossing or winding round the front and back of coats and suits. . And linings often are coordina in prints fo match blouses, %F, in solid colors to pick up the 'pre- dominamt color in a matching print dress or blouse. Dresses are soft and fluid, in rich fabrics that drape well, The empire waistline still figures as an important influence, but skirts are generally on the slim side. Oft- en a skirt will look narrow, but in motion will disclose floating pan- els or concealed pleating, to give a decidedly feminne effect. ENSEMBLES POPULAR The ensemble idea will be. most popular this season, in the guise of either suits or dresses. Practical as well as wearable, the ensemble of- fers a multi-purpose wardrobe for day into evening wear. Fabrics stand out as an import- ant and very individual approach to fashion. Textured surfaces are lighter and airier looking for Spring, including the bubbel-light poodle cloths, whisper - weight fleeces, and frosty-hued zibellines. Hard-surface fabrics such as gabar- dines are making a successful play for recognition in coats, suits and ensembles, and silks and linens take the honors for casual as well as dress-up wear, In colors, the white - frosted tones will be seen everywhere, as well as Spring pastels. The big news is the strong emergence of biege as a go-with-everything neut- ral. The beige family is seen in shades from pale ivory to golden caramel to dull bark tones. Navy is, as always, a definite fashion Soler for Spring, basic and flatter- 8. ACCESSORIES IMPORTANT The accessories a woman wears this Spring will be a main feature in her wardrobe plans. Pretty gloves in varying lengths will take over where the sleeves leave off, and neat but feminine hats will top her every costume. y Large hankies, oversized roses, and smooth leather handbags com- plete the fashion picture for spring Pretty Prints Set Fashion Scene Agog Al] the fashion world is in a whirl over prints among the most importeslt fashion news for Spring and Summer 1953. The new ones are pretty and personal and they give a practical accent to the smart woman's wardrobe. Prints are pretty, because col- or and design on wonderfully supple silk or rayon fabrics com- bine to give softness and grace to everthing from sportswear to evening clothes, Patterns range from geometrics and Renaissance- like designs, or flowers of every shape and size, to "texture'" and fur effects, or conversation prints. And colors are divided between light and dark grounds, depending on the occasion. A good general rule might be: light for the coun- try, dark for town, and beige, the news-making neutral of the season, for any and all stops on the social calendar. Prints Are Personal Prints are very personal too, for carefully chosen designs can give a made-to-order look to 'a woman's wardrobe. Whether trim and tailored with neat geometries, tweed-like patterns, closely knit abstracts; or fragile and delicate, with allover flowers, the new branching tree designs, and warp effects in lightly streaked patterns, there are types to spell out every personality. And perhaps most important of all, prints are practical, serving as they do a mutitude of uses, In the costume theme, the well-dress- ed woman's wardrobe basics are the all-print dress and jacket, the solid cardigan over a print dress (or vice versa), the suit ,with matching print blouse and jacket lining. The dress that went dancing the night before might well turn up at the bridge table the next day, bare shoulders covered with a little bolero. The print blouse strikes a match with solid-hued suits, and the cardigan can top any simple dress with ease. Good for Travel And the woman who loves casual clothes with a brilliant dash of color will find neat little geometric and paisley-printed blouses to wear with sweaters and skirts, or 000s j HORWICH -* JEWELLERS S-- LLRs astssnsns. - Makes This - years before you can enjoy a com- plete service of lovely silverplate . . .
