He was replying in the legisla- ture to an editorial in the March 14 issue of Saturday Night which said the attorney - general was A hin "lacking in conscience" and "failed to meet the demands of his office." The case-involved Ronald Powers and a man named Nugent. Nugent was charged with robbing a motor- ist and Powers told police Nugent had spent the night with him, far from the scene of the crime. Then the victim identified Powers as a partner and the police laid a charge. He was convicted and sentenced to five years. Mr. Porter said police later un- covered evidence establishing Powers' innocence but, he said, Powers made a deliberate mis: statement and consequently brought suspicion on himself.
