Many Bridesmaids Make Gowns Adaptable for Wear After Wedding Take a poll among your friends who have been bridesmaids or maids of honor. You will find that a high percentage of them sew their own dresses or have them 'made. When sewing centre experts were canvassed for opinions as to why this was so, they came up LE with several answers. The old custom of the bride's father providing for the brides- maid's dresses is one that toda is honored more in the breac! than in the observance. The cus- tom began to weaken during the depression years of the thirties. If the bride's family wish to. share expenses, a private arrangement is often reached between the bride and her attendant. But the bride's father is no longer expected to foot the bill. Young women these days find sewing their own costumes the best solution. They point out to sewing centre advisers that they often have a large group of friends and may receive several invita- tions to act as bridesmaids within a space of a few years. This is inevitable as they and their friends are usually at the marry- ing stage around tre same time. Many of the friends are occupied with saving for their own wed- flings. Another item of interest was that the IODE student, Joy Cayley, was included in the Dean's Honor List semi-annial meeting would be held in St. Caherines later in the year. What counsel have sewing centres for bridesmaids in such a financial dilemma? Every woman loves a wedding -- even if it is not her own. She likes to accept the hon- or of attending a bride. One way of planning a bridal at- tendant's gown which will be ade- ant's gown which will be ade- quate even for a forma' wedding, and at the same time serve after- wards with a few alterations as an afternoon or evening dress, is to choose a simple foundation for the costume; adding formal de- tails which can later be removed. Rayon taffetas, faille, satin or crepe are all good looking yet rea- sonably priced fabrics. The foun- dation can be strapless. An over- skirt of lace cr net, with a lace bolero or removable lace yoke and sleeves, will give the costume a formal wedding air. If a jacket of the same material is made it trans- forms the dre ss, when the over- skirt is taken off, into an after- noon ensemble. Worn strapless with a net stole, the costume would look well for evening. A girl who expected to act as bridesmaid more than once could save the lace and net and make a new foundation in whatever color the bride suggested for each new occa- sion.
