Joe I've known for four years, first as a friend. After his return from Korea we became quite serious. Baseball has been his ambition al- ways, and now he is affiliated with a major cl#b, but the climb is hard and at times he is discour- If the "big break" fails to mat- erialize in baseball, his father wants to take him into business, and Joe has promised to give it a try, although it isn't what really wants. Joe has emphatically declared his love for me, and re- cently he asked me to wear his ring. He says we will marry when he has money enough to keep us, without bank loans or time pay- ments. Yet when he sjarts talking marriage or future plans, he seems unsure of his prospects in base- ball, When he is away, he is thoughtless about writing or call- ing, and seldom offers an excuse. About eight months ago I met Don and we started dating. I like him a lot, as he is reliable and thoughtful--qualities I admire in a boy and find lacking in Joe at times. Also a good engineering career awaits him after he grad- uates--but first a tour of Naval duty. My family and some friends lean towards Don and his fine qualities, and others speak for Joe --and their conflicting views only add to my confusion. My heart says Joe--for love alone; and my head says Don, on the basis of his personal qualities and prospects of future security, which seem to augur a happier life --and already there is some feel- ing there. A forced decision now could lead to unhappiness later, and my decision' must be based on my own feelings, I know; but your impartial opinion would help a great deal. Don always has been sincere with me, and now wants me to say where I stand. The boys know about each other, but not that 3 am torn between them. Dear F. D.: Since it is the re- lationship of marriage you want primarily, I think you had better settle for Don, if an early deci- sion is imperative. Evidently he feels ready for marriage in the fairly near future. Moreover he appears to be a sterling character with sound prospects. And he does not need coaxing. If he doesn't win you, he probably won't wait too long before choosing another girl. So' now is your big chance with him. \ As I get the picture, you've been foiled by Joe in your attempts to marry him. It seems you are in- tensively attractive to him, but marriage isn't. He doesn't want responsibilities and dependents, not for a long while yet, he feels. At this point, indeed, he's not even sure he would want you exclu- sively for life. And he is allergic to "womanish" demands, as wit- ness his non-co-operative bias in regard to the letters and telephone calls you expect. THE LONG VIEW Taking the long view, it oceuse | to me that Joe is possibly an wn-| witting agent of Providence steer- ing you towards marriage to Don. Your unsatisfied yen for Joe prob- ably makes you wistfully appeal- ing, yet subtly remote, in encour- aging Don's suit tentatively. And this complex attitude doubtless lends you a baffling charm for Don, who might feel less inter- ested if you were more eager. By instinct men know when a woman is angling for marriage, and by reflex they tend to flee im such case. Frustrated as you are, in rela- tion to magnetic but reluctant Joe, you have emotion to invest else- where; hence are vulnerable to Don's address, and appreciate his steadiness, a healing contrast to Joe's instability. The really marry- ing kind of girl makes her own happiness in family relationship to a decent man, and doesn't hanker after might-have-beens who got away. So, summing up, 'I vote for Don 'as versus Joe. -- M. H.
