24 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Thursday, July 30, 1953 They Can't Understand Each Other's Language By BILL BOSS dian Staff Writer br {one another when they whistle or Ci IN KOREA (CP)--While Cana- dian officers find language, diffi- s a barrier between them and Koreans under their command, pri- vates and corporals say they can "get across" to their Korean com- rades and understand them. There are 300 Republic of Korea Army soldiers in the 25th Canadian Infantry Brigade. In the infantry sections one in every three or four men is a Korean who cannot speak French or English. . The Koreans know only the little English they have picked up since the war. The Canadians know much less Korean. OFFICERS' VIEW Officers tend to make much of the "barrier." At the command level, Brig. Jean Allard--who admires "my brave fittle Katcoms"--says nonetheless "I like to feel at home with my troops, to be able to get their feel- ing and to be sure they get mine." Typical of some officers' reac- tions after four months' experi- ence with the Katcoms are those of 2nd Lieut. Bill Watt of Port Ar- thur, Ont., a platoon commander with the 3rd Patricias. He has 12 Katcoms among his men, with whom he lives on close terms. "The language problem is in- superable,'"' he says. : "It renders control difficult. If I were wounded it would be diffi- cult for me to tell a Katcom how to carry on. When he is wounded he can't tell me where he is hurt, or how or where it happened." , THE OTHER SIDE But the corporals: and the men belittle the language factor. At that level the men have "buddied up," and each Katcom is teamed with a Canadian soldier. Cpl. James C. McCullagh of Dunnville, -Ont;, who has made several successful patrols with Katcoms in his crew, says: "We do very little talking on patrols anyway. In this sort of war you make silent signs to one another--and we al] understand one another perfectly." 'The "buddy system' is con- sidered to have worked best in movements of Chinese patrols by interpreting the signals they give throw stones." BASIC BRIEFIN One Patricia company com- mander said that when briefings were basic and in simple English they were successful. Hence a Katcom is told: "Patrol. Tonight. We go there (pointing to area of patrol.) Maybe catch Chinese. We go 10 o'clock. Come back four o'clock." Capt. Art Kemsley of Calgary, second-in-command of a Patricia company, says: "The best indication that they understand is in the men's only beef against them--their 'old sol- dier' tricks. "If it's something nice they un- derstand perfectly. If it's not good they make like they don't. But the NCOs didn't take long to wise up to that one." A tragic aspect of the language factor, however, came to light in analysis of the RCR's May 2 battle when a platoon position was over- run and held briefly by the Chi- nese. Some Katcoms, unable to pro- nounce the password properly when challenged in the trenches during the battle, were mistaken for Chi- nese by Canadians who were taking no chances and shot. / CAR CRASH KILLS WOMAN WINDSOR, Ont. Abandon Little Gib, By BILL BOSS Canadian Press Staff Writer SEOUL (CP) -- Post-armistice censorship relaxations today per- mit the disclosure that Canadian troops will have to abandon Little Gibraltar in the withdrawal to create a 2%-mile buffer zone under the truce agreement. At one time or another the three Canadian regiments which have served in Korea have been con- nected with Little Gibraltar, a hill position which Canadian forces have defended strongly. The with- drawal must be made within three days. The easing of censorship dis- closed the fact that Canadian forces were holding part of the |Canadian Stronghold Korean battle line. The 3rd battal- ion, Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry, held Little Gibral- tar, and the Royal Canadian Regi- ment held lower hills southeast- wards. The Royal 22nd Regiment was in reserve. A famous Hook position, long the Commonwealth division's south an- chor and with which the Canadians have been associated, was also lost to the demilitarized zone. It is now held by Australians. The armistice Monday fell on the 1,111th day of the war and the eve of the Commonwealth division's second anniversary. The Canadian forces devoted to- day--first of the three they have to complete evacuation of their positions--to rem ammuni- tion. During the next 72 hours they must get everything they want to keep out of the area and that in- cludes everything likely to be use- ful in building a new semi-perma- nent headquarters in new areas. However, mindful that the armis- tice may be only a pause in the hostilities, they gave top priority today to ammunition. Practically all h-grade opals come from Australia, where the first black opal was found 50 years ago. STAFFORD BROS. Monumental Works 318 DUNDAS ST.
