92 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Thursday, August 6, 1953 Blessing Of Pets Is Ancient Rite The next time Fido strays, you might search for him 'in church. Dogs, as well as horses, pigs and other animals, are churchgoers on occasion in many countries. The "Blessing of the animals," and ancient church custom, is still annually observed in parts of Eng- land, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Mexico, and even the United States, comments the National Geographic bulletin. At Holy Trinity Church, Here- ford, England. The blessing is performed on the first Sunday after October 3, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. Parishioners, mostly children, bring everything from ponies to gold fish. Rabbits, ducks, chickens, guinea pigs, even white mice, have re- ceived the blessing at Hereford. During the service two years ago, a pair of homing pigeons escaped from a' basket. They perched on the church roof until the service was over, then flew home. CALIFORNIA MENAGERIE At the Cathedral Garden of St. James in Fresno, California, past participams in the blessing have cluded baby alligators, bees, turtles, snails, hamsters and bull frogs, in addition to the more com- mon Zz. In Catholic countries, the "Bene- diction of Beasts" is annually performed on January 27, St. Anthony's Day. Mexican villagers gaily paint their dogs, pigs, par- rots and burros and adorn them with ribbons and flowers to honor the asion. In %he tiny hamlet of Turtmann in Switzerland's Valaisan Alps, the ceremony is held on April 23, the day of St. George, who is patron saint of domestic animals in ti region. This year, for the 142nd time, men of Jesenwang, Austria, rode their heavy farm horses straight to the altar of the village church for a special blessing. In 1881, a fatal animal epidemic plagued the community, and the parish priest was asked to invoke blessings. When the epidemic premptly sub- sided, villagers pledged to bless their livestock once each year, Jesenwang's unique ritual may soon cease, however. The little Bavarian town now boasts 36 trac- tors, and horses are in decline. AND SPECIAL PEWS Some of England's oldest churches still have pews equipped with iron hooks and rings. Here churchgoers in medieval times fastened their bloodhounds, mas- tiffs, and other hunting breeds during services. A few churches had a small pew within the chancel arch, known as | the "hall dog pew". This space was reserved for dogs. Special tongs, with long wooden handles and wooden teeth, were used to cap- ture dogs that wandered to in- accessible parts of the church. In Siena, Italy, horses are taken to church and blessed prior to racing in the Palio, the world's oldest horse race. An animal affair since the 14th century, the Palio is a grueling three-lap run around Siena's town square that frequent- ly takes a heavy toll of partici- pants. U.K. DOUBLES AUTO SALES TO CANADA AND USA British automobile exports to Canada and the United States earn- ed $44 million *in the first six months of 1953, twice the amount earned in the same period in 1952. The $44 million represented 38,- 374 cars, of which 20,772 were ex- ported to Canada and 17,602 were sent to the USA.
