PAUL (AP)--If you come to a Minnesota town with better-than- average streets, parks or schools, maybe you can mark it down to liquer, More than 300 Minnesota com- munities are profiting under a lig- vor law enforcement idea adopted by the state legislature 19 years ago. It decreed that towns 'under 10,- 000 population in wet counties could open their own ligor stores, and at no private dealers could be licensed to compete with them. Now 360 villages and towns have such stores, most of them selling both by the hottle and by the drink. They are manned hy ii y employ- ees and the city gets the profits. Last year these stores sold more than $33,000,000 worth of liguor, about one-fourth of the state's t yo sales, and realized a profit of 000,000. Take Richfield, a Minneapolis suburb. It showed $130,422 in pro- fits on sales of $771,179. In one year Orr, with a population of 234, netted $37,260--or $159.20 per cap- ita, Not all make such profits and a few even lose money. But some travellers say you can spot a town | af with municipal stores by its better streets and street lighting, its bet- ter schools and. parks, and such luxuries as municipal swimming pools. The desire to get in on rich Make Liquor Pay profits has led to some strange shenanigans. The village of Warroad, in dry Roseau county, built a peninsula into Lake of the Woods, which is in a wet county of the same name, a site for its liquor store. Other + Sab bordering wet counties have taken similar steps. .In addition, nine counties which voted dry at the time of the repeal of bitien have since voted wet to een of permitting muni- cipal stores, Ditches Plane He Purchased Two Weeks Ago OTTAWA (CP) -- A 38-year-old Timmins pilot and his passenger escaped unscathed Sunday night when his small seaplane crashed in an alder swamp at Kingsmere, 13 miles north of here "We .were sure lucky," said Romeo Corriveau, whose plane apparen eau ht in a downdraft ter tak from Lake Kings- mere for Hid His passenger was his sister, Mrs. Lucien Leduc of Ottawa. ; Corriveau said he bought the plane two weeks hy age for $2,360. This new method of gulping air was demonstrated Sunday at Los Angeles county's Rancho Los Ami- gos, where there are more post- polio respiratory cases than any- where in the worldw. Thirty-five of the 133 patients whose norma! breathing muscles are paralyzed have learned to take! Lin oxygen hy the new method, which requires from a day to sev- {eral months~to learn. It was dis- covered by a patient, Technicians explain "frog breath- ing" this way: The air is held in the lungs by closing the larynx. The esophagus is filled with air and forced into the lungs by a pumping action of the cheeks and tongue. This process continues un. til lungs are filled. Then they are emptied, usually through partly. .closed lips. The pro- cess of filling the lungs is started again. Usually patients can take six of these "breaths" a minute.
