Comp. cult to suggest tender types of rotation that might be followed since the size of the farm, acreage of canning crops, number of stock maintained and extent of other - [types of crop production are de- ciding factors practical soil gram. Growing a relatively small acre- age of canning crops on a general or dairy farm does not present a real problem in soil fertility main- tenance, since it may be fitted into the longer rotations and sufficient manure may be available for the cultivated crops. The real problem exists on smaller farms, or where the stock population is small or absent, and manure is not avail able and cultivated cash crop pro- duction is the major enterprise. In such cases long term grass ro- tations are not economically pos- sible an yet soil structure is de- pendent on replacing the plant in determining a management pro- fibre in the soil burnt up during. the cuitivation period, With this in mind, reports H. Hill, Division .of Horticulture, Central Expermental Farm, a group of plots with different rotations of canning peas, tomatoes and sweet' corn have been studied for a period of six years at the Smithfield Sub- station, Ont., on Percy fine sandy loam. In the four-year rotations without manure but with commer- eial fertilizer applied to the canning |0CCI 'RESULTS (Continued from Page 1) Chem., 3rd; Fr. Auth., 2nd; Comp, 3rd William A. Kellar: Hist. Comp., ganic matter in a five-year period. In a similar rotation, but with to- matoes repalced by sweet corn and all the corn stover ploughed under,o there was no reduction in soil or- anic matter. It appears that when e corn stover is returned to the soll, maintenance is not too serious i pron roblem. In other four-year ro- tat in which three canning crops are grown and the land is in clover sod for one year by the device of seeding clover with the corn or peas, the reduction in soil organic matter was no greater than in the standard four-year ro- tation with two canning crops. However, seeding red clover with peas or corn reduced the yield of these two crops and a satisfactory stand of clover was not always ob- tained. Outstanding in interest was the soil improvement which had taken place in two-year rotations of con- tinuous canning crops. In these rotations a crop of 'tomatoes or a crop of corn is followed in the second year by a crop of peas. After the peas are harvested mille or Sudan grass is sown and the crop is disked in at the early flowering stage, Fall rye is then sown, which is disked in the follow- ing spring in preparation for to- matoes or corn. In these two ro- tations twelve tons of manure per acre are applied every other year, These rotations produced five can- ning crops in the five-year period compared to an average of three crops in other rotations.: Despite this fact, there aws an appreciable increase in soil organic matter, ex- changeable potassium and .soluble phosphorus. While it is true that {manure was applied in these.two rotations the average annual appli cation of six tons per acre is per- haps not beyond the supply avail- able to the grower whose canning crop acreage is relatively small. While the rotations have possibly mot been in progress long enough to attach significance to differ- ences in yield, it is noteworthy that yields of corn, peas or tomatoes were highest whenever manure was applied in a rotation and the average highest yields were pro- duced in the two-year rotations dscribed above.
