Ident AJAX (Times-Gazette Staff Re- porter) -- Positive identification of the jewellry scattered on the road- _ way at Bloor and Jane Street, To- ronto, in the aftermath of a gun battle between three Tillsonburg men and Toronto Police was made today by Tony Hickey of Hickey's Credit Jewellers, Harwood Avenue, ax. The thought that there might be a link between the "robbery of Hickey's store in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and the discovery of a miscellany "of jew- ellery scattered about the scene of the robbers' smashed car, prompt- ed the police to have Mr. Hickey look the assortment over. Mr. Hickey said tonight the loot was definitely from his store, and that' it now was not worth bring- ing home. The thieves had strip- ped the merchandise from the pro- tective cases and the silverware and other items were badly dam- aged, bent, and scratched. Brooms had been used to sweep the assortment into a heap. Entry was gained into Hickey's store through a transom after an abortive attempt to bore through the wall from Harpell's Upholstery next door, which had been enter- ed by a similar means, but at the rear. The most valuable items in the jewellery store were contained in the safe, which showed marks as if an attempt had been made to pry open the heavy door. Mr. Hickey wishes to assure all of his customers who had left re- pair work that their property is safe. Mrs. Joseph Quinn, store clerk in Hickey's store, said last night, | she was thankful that the thieves were not provoked into any gun play at the store as her home is directly opposite. It is supposed that the thieves were disturbed, as several show cases of other valuable goods were not molested and other evi- dence points to a very fast exit. The loss which is colse to $1,000 is covered by insurance. Earlier, before the jewellery was identified, it was supposed that the burglary was the work of the same gang which looted Rowland's Appliances, a few weeks ago, and shortly after another break in oc- curred at Pow's Coffee Shop. The 650-delegate convention split over the lotteries issue so sharply that for the first time the chair- man had to cali for a show of hands before ruling in favor of the lottery legalizers. More agreeable to the delegates was a resolution, passed unanim- ously, demanding that the federal government establish a govern- ment-subsidized contributory na- tional health insurance scheme covering every Canadian. The lotteries resolution was sponsored by the Quebec Federa- tion of Labor. It called for an amendment to the Criminal Code to permit establishment of provin- cial lotteries, but the resolutions committee amended this to 'gov- ernment-operated" lotteries. The federation observed that a larg percentage of Canadians buy sweepstakes and Jottery tickets but the money goes to other countries. It could be used to improve social services and eliminate tag days in Canada. The battle that ensued saw Ford Brand of the Toronto pressmen charge that legalized lotteries would conflict with the national health insurance plan. G: P. Schollie of Montreal, chair- man of the officers' reports, said he. was glad to see that some people in Quebec had the "guts" to stand against legalized lotteries in that province. Other developments: Premier Frost of Ontario, in a brief appearance along with Rob- ert Saunders, chai of the On- tario hydro commission, said his government is prepared to assist co-operative house building in the province. Gordon Cushing, TLC general secretary - treasurer, reported a surplus of $35,630 in the labor body's 1952-53 operations. Some delegates, debating the health insurance resolution, sug- ested it did not go far enough. e expressed concern over the possibility that it may be handled by insurance companies and not directly by the government. Percy Bengough, TLC president, assured delegates that though there are a lot of details to be worked out, the executive knows what is needed and will work to get the plan through. Butter Instead Of Guns LONDON (AP)--Russta, a pre- war exporter of butter, has quietly started purchases in Western mar- kets totalling more than 25,000 tons, an international survey showed today. This is not a large amount from the viewpoint of domestic consump- a tion but it looms high on the inter national market. Russians are ne gotiating with New Zealand, Aus- tralia, Holland and Denmark. Whether the Soviet Union has entered world butter markets for internal reasons or for reshipment to hungry Eastern European satel- lites was not clear.
