Everyone is welcome, more of the plans for same will be made known hereabouts as soon as they are complete. Speaking of basketball, the Oshawa Industrial League, with a booming rise in number of players and team entries this year, is planning an organiza- tion meeting for Simcoe Hall onl at all to do with the league executive + « . HOW ARE THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Thureday, September 54, 1008 " Jr. Police Games Mark Broken OCVI Track Team Dominates Sth. Annual Meet Scoring 104 Pts. By BOB RIFE BOWMANVILLE--The Games, held on the cinder oval of the Ontario Training School for Boys at Bowmanville yesterday afternoon, saw a powerful Oshawa Collegiate and Vocational Institute track team establish a new high in grand aggregate Their total of 104 points . . . some 26 points bet-~ ter than their mark of last year which meet officials felt would never be duplicated, let alone bettered. Four new meet records were established during the day-long event, and one other was equalled. points. fifth andual Junior Police The OCVI team, some 22-strong, & so dominated the meet that they scored firsts in all but two of the Intermediate class and walked off with firsts in every event of Senior class. : Their point win in the Inter- mediate group gave them the OPP trophy, won last year by the Bowmanville Training School. They did a repeat in the Senior class for the RCMP trophy. The grand total of points gave them rights also to the District No. 8 Provincial Trophy. 4th YEAR IN-A-ROW It is the fourth year in succession that the OCVI has won that trophy and the meet championship. The new records came for the most part in the Intermediat eor under-16 YoaL class. Carey of BTS equalled the old mark of 12 seconds set un 1952 by John Graham of OCVI in the 80-yard hurdles. Dus of Ritson Road school better- ed by 3 inches the broad jump mark of 16 ft. set by Keith Suther- land of OCVI. in 1950. G. Parks of OCVI bettered his own old mark of 1:16.2 in the %- mile obstacle race set in 1952 with a time of 1:12. In the junior class, under 13 years, Ritson Road school's fine 220-yard relay team smashed their own school's old mark of 32.4 set in 1952 with a new mark of 31.1. The other record was set in the senior class, under 18 years, where Rich Wilson, "playing-coach" of the OCVI track team set a record of 19 ft. 3 inches in the running broad jump. The old mark was 18 ft. 10 inches, | set by G. Armstrong of Bowman: | ville High in 1951. The symbol of the meet, eration between the boys in train- ing and the police forces, is of course best seen in the featured special event, the race. And if a record performance is| likely here, it will be from Cor- | poral Pickering of the Cobourg de- tachment of the RCMP. He won the race last year with A. Hyatt of the Training School as his partner. This year he picked R. Clark of the school and again scooted home in front. Corporal Pickering is the | two-time winner of the event. Best time in that particular event was established in 1949 when Jim Harris of the OCVI clipped off a 4:55.2 mile. Top team among the junior com- petitors was the squad from Osh- awa's Ritson Road School. They not bettered their own 220-yard mark, but collected enough points to nose out Centre Street School of Oshawa 19-18 and win the Osh- awa Police Association Trophy. This time the trophy was present- ed to Bob Crawford, star of the Ritson squad by Sergeant Ernie Barker of the Oshawa Police De: partment Traffic Squad. Outstanding for the Centre Street team was Southwell who scored firsts in the 50 and 75 yard dashes and a second in the Funning broad jump. - JUNIOR 50-Yard Dash 1.
