*A13dVS ONDIW THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Saturday, October 24, 1958 B WHITBY WELCOMES DUNLOP TIRE AND RUBBER GOODS COMPANY LIMITED ? THE WHITBY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE On behalf of the Industries, Merchants, Business People and Residents of Whitby and District take pride in the Dunlop Tire and Rubber Co. Ltd., decision to locate in Whitby and would extend best wishes and a hearty welcome to our pleasant and pro- gressive community. . Whitby Chamber of Commerce hope and feel quite sure that this great development is the harbinger of further balanced solid and diversified industrial 'development in Whitby. . The Planning Committee are at the moment working on future prospective develop- ments which suggest that the District will have cause to be additionally elated with new announcements in the not too distant future. WHITBY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE * OPEN LETTER In seeking to sttengthen the Chamber of Commerce at this important point in Whitby's history, we are anxious to bring in many new Members. The Chamber has an. excellent record of achievements and a fine program of work but it is felt that there are not enough Members. To the ladies we particularly address this letter inviting you to become an active Member. WHAT IS THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE? A Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary association of citizens to promote the commercial, industrial and civic welfare of the community and of the district in which it lies. Its Members include business and professional people, of both sexes, and farmers. WHO CAN JOIN THE CHAMBER? "Any reputable person, directly or indirectly engaged or interested in trade, Commerce or the economic or social welfare of the District shall be eligible for Membership in the Whitby Chamber of Commerce." THE "WHY" OF BEING A MEMBER. It is an established fact that the stronger the Chamber of Commerce, the petter the Community. Both the Provincial and Dominion Government welcome approaches from the Cana- dian Chamber of Commerce with mutually advantageous results. LOCALLY, too, the advantages are very considerable for it matters not whether your business be retailing goods, merchandise or services or selling transportation to far-away places, there is a place for you in the Chamber and you can be better known through the Chamber. FARMERS and other land-owners may be wondering about selling parcels of land for the new industries which we are now attracting to Whitby. ) SHOPKEEPERS may have general problems for discussion--even, the question of store closing hours at special times. Whatever your problem the Chamber is an excellent place to reach a solution and unanimity of purpose --and action! SEWER EXTENSION PLAN. You may have been giving considerable thought to the great sewer extension plan by which Council proposes completion of main sewers for the Town of Whitby--giving sewers to those who have paid for the service for years without actually being on the sewers and, at the same time effecting a saving of several mills yearly to each taxpayer. The Chamber has arranged a mass meeting in Whitby Town Hall at 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 29th at which the appropriate Town and other officials will be present to answer and clarify. ye mary questions you may wish to present. The Chamber cordially invites all interested to be at this meeting to earn the facts. FREE MEMBERSHIP BONUS. As an added inducement to attract NEW MEMBERS right away, at the General Meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 8, it was decided to invite new membership immediately and the bal- ance of 1953 would be given as a bonus payment of the usual fee of $5.00 for membership for the whole of 1954. Membership fees may be mailed or delivered to: Mr. Horace Hiscox, Manager of the Dominion Bank, Whitby -- the Chamber's Treasurer; to Mr. Charles H. Chaytor--Secretary of the Chamber; at the Library Building, Whitby (Telephone 2687) or to the Membership Chairman, Mr. Alun Jones, Whitby Cleaners, Whitby. DO IT NOW! This open letter takes the place of the usual direct approach so that present Members may be free from the need for time-consuming calls and be able to devote their time to other projects, etc. We urge ali potential members to make application at once and, again, we would, remind the ladies that we need Members of both sexes and that their views and ideas are most valuable. We are all busy with our various occasions but, in the Chamber of Commerce, 'a small amount of time will yield great dividends. Apart from "emergency" meetings and Director's meetings, regular meetings are only held quarterly--with the Annual General Meeting in November of each year. To PROFESSIONAL MEN and others with little spare time, we proffer a warm invitation to join--for the Chamber needs the best possible membership. Membership enhances the prestige of the individual, the Chamber and the district in which the Chamber lies. : JOIN NOW IN THE WORK OF MAKING OUR COMMUNITY AN EVEN BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN. Yours Sincerely, Robert G. Langford, President. Charles H. Chaytor, Secretary.
