WHITMAN TO THE AILING HOUSE DOING AWAY WITH CASEMENT . : In my living room I have two casement windows that 1+ ould like 1)» do away with Could I have glass block put in -_ssfully? My reason for this is that the windows open in and create (rib they also a drapery problem and rain to leak through. Do are p you think this is practical? ANSWER: It will be practical. After removing the case- ment windows it will be necessary to n> out the opening so that the glass blocks can be set in mor- tar. Before doing this, I suggest that you obtain a catalogue from one of the manfacturers so that the proper size opening could be made to receive either a six, eight or 2-inch block. The actual dimen- sions of these blocks are about one- quarter inch less than those Za oe 2 to ge catalogue from one of the build- bug material dealers in or near you city. PAINT PEELED OFF DOYNSPOUT QUESTION: Our house is about three years old and when it was built the contracior, plated an al- ready-pain rainspout on front and back of the building. The spout is now showing bare ts and much of the paint is peeling. Should the metal be conditioned be- fore new paint is applied? ANSWER: Evidently the down- spouts are of galvanized metal. Remove the remainder of the paint and then wash the surface with vinegar. When dry, coat the metal with red lead or a zinc-base rust inhibitive paint. The final coats of paint can be ordinary house paint to match the walls. FADED CEMENT TILE ROOF housewares sections of large de- partment stores. ROOF PAINT QUESTION: Is re a special paint for asphalt that will wear well? I have an asphalt roof in air condition, but it looks ter- e. ANSWER: Asphalt roof coatings rimarily developed + for preservation of asphalt felt and I do not know of any one particular type that will enhance the appear- ance. Most of the nationally known manufacturers of roofing materials make a durable roof coating. PRESERVING BASEMENT QUESTION: I af planning on constructing a basement at the present time. I have heard thal walls would crack during the win- ter months. I contemplate building the basement now and next year I plan on constructing the rest of the house. Is there any possible way to preserve the ment walls so nothing would happen ANSWER: Nothing should hap- pen to the walls if they are thick enough to resist the pressure of earth at all times of the year. This same pressure will be exerted against your walls whether or not the superstructure of the, house the | rests on them. It would be advis- able to place a "roof" over the open foundation walls to keep out rain and snow, particularly if the floor or the basement is not equip- IN THE HOME WORKSHOP HOW TO MAKE AND QUESTION: We have a t tile roof on our stone-veneered bungalow. There is the matter of fix- tures -- the right kind and how to lace them. A valance shelf may needed, or a simple cornice box. These questions arise whether |curtains are made at home or {bought ready-made. If material is bought by the yard there are sew- ing details that will make the dif- ference between a home-made and a professional *job. Measurements are important too. HOWLING NOISE IN CHIMNEY QUESTION: Several months ago we moved into our new home an have experienced quite a bit of trouble. The wind howls into our fireplace when the velocity is more than 15 miles an hour. We wonder if you could suggest a possible remedy? ' ANSWER: See that the fireplace damper is closed tightly. It is pos- sible that the noise is due to the fact that the chimney lining does not extend h enough above the top of the brick. Try ex- tending this eight-to-twelve inches above the brick work. If the furn- ace flue and the fireplace flue are the same chimney raise the top of one above the level of the other for a distance of at least 12 inches. PAINT-SPATTERED ROOF QUESTION: When painting our stucco house with a white cement: base paint (the kind that is mixed with water), the roof was spatter- ed with some of this paint. The man doing the work never bother- ed to remove it and said it would wash off. However, it hasn't wash- ed off. Could you advise me what I could use to remove these spots? ANS : There is no solution or chemical that will remove the paint without affecting or possibly damaging the roof. If you have a rigid asbestos shingle on your roof you might be able to take off the spots with very fine sandpaper, but on a porous roofing material this is impractical. Hereafter, when such paint is used, the spatters can be removed by promptly hos- ing down with water while the paint is still wet. HEMLOCK SHINGLES QUESTION: The side of my house is made of large hemlock shingles. How often should it be painted? Should one or two coats be applied? Is the paint chiefly for the sake of appearance or is it ne- cessary to keep the wood from de- teriorating? _ ANSWER: The life of wood sid- ing or shingles is prolonged when they are coated with shingle stain or paint, The other reason is that colored paint or stain adds to the appearance of the building. At least two coats of paint should be ap- plied, but some manufacturers re- commend three coats. TERMITES QUESTION: I would appreciate your forwarding me any informa- tion available on termites. Our house is about 50 years old and the wood throughout is very hard, the basement rafters. There are also suggestions on methods for ex- terminating these dangerous pests. Henry Kelsey of the Hudson's Bay Company reached the prairies 1691. Conversion To Duplexes Helps Housing Problem With shortage of desirable hous- ing still acute in most parts of Canada, old, multi-roomed houses are coming to the rescue through conversion into duplex or triplex d |form, according to the Canadian which has been mak a study of the housing problem. Older houses are very often just as sound basi cally as the day they were built, and require only minor architec- tural changes, renovation and re-decoration, make excellent homes for two or three families instead of one. These conversions are particu- larly apt where the children of the family have grown up, some hav- ing married, others moved to other cities. This leaves the old folk with too large a house on their hands, yet they are often reluctant to move out. Institute of yn Heatirg, In many such cases, where the house is So built that the upper floor is virtually cut off, there is probably no need to construct a separate entrance for the upper flat. The main requirement to make the house a two-family unit is the provision of kitchen facilities on the second floor, and a bath- room for the ground floor occu: pants. In planning this type of conver- sion, there are a few main fac- tors to keep in mind, First, the upper floor kitchen should be lo- cated, when possible, direct! above the lower kitchen. tending the present water, drain- age, and electricity or gas facili- ties directly to the upper floor. In choosing fixtures for the up- per kitchen, particular attention should be paid to the selection of the right type of sink. A combina- tion laundry-tub and sink unit with built-in drain-board will probably be most suitable. Bear in mind that the upper tenant will very likely want to use the sink for a certain amount of laundry as well as preparation of food and dish- washing. Conversely, the location of the lower - floor bathroom should be as near as possible directly below the 'main bathroom, and for the same reasons. But in placing the {lower floor bathroom, it is likely that suitable space for it will be a greater problem. owever, this is not nearly so much of a problem as might be supposed.
