' Bow -| Po Exports To South America Decline By THE CANADIAN PRESS The lands of Latin America are falling short of expectations as the great white hope of Canadian ex- rters. With Argentina again becoming a large wheat exporter able to feed her neighbo; countries, and with some countries facing ex- change problems and internal polit- ical strife, the Canadian 'trade channels have not been expanding as some trade experts had ex- pected. Hopes were raised when ship- ments to the Latin area climbed to record heights in 1952. But exports to that area fell by 27 per cent last year. And while exports declined, Canada's great depend Ca lan oil--de- spite expandin, domestic produec- tion--boosted imports in 1953 to an all-time high. GREATER DEFICIT These swelling imports and fall- ing exports increased Canada's deficit in Latin trade from a mere $10,700,000 in 1952 to more than ,000,000 in 1953--the highest in five years. And while the portion of Can- ada's total exports going to Eur- ope dropped to 8.9 per cent from 10.9 in 1952, the portion going to the Latin countries dropped to 4.8 from 6.3. One of the big problems in the Latin market lias in Brazil. Ex- rts to that country dropped to ,700,000 from $81,900,000. There were other export de- clines to Mexico, Cuba and Chile. Business in Mexico and Cuba had dropped, reducing the incentive to import. Better crops in Argentina meant that Chile turned to that source for wheat, rather than Canada. IMPORTS INCREASED Steel, iron and non-ferrous metal products were the hardest hit in the exports decline. Mexico, Vene- zula and Brazil reduced purchases of Canadi t biles. There also were smaller sales in the Latin area of Canadian farm ma- chinery, electrical apparatus, cop- per and aluminum products, wheat, wood pulp and cured fish. On the other hand, boosted imports of crude trol eum from Venezuela to $145,000, 000 from $127,000,000 in 1952. The value of imports of green coffee increased to $52,600,000 from $45,- 000,000; of bananas to $22,800,000 from $20,900,00; of fuel oils to $8,800,000 from $7,900,000. Imports of unrefined sugar drop, to $10,700,000 from $168,- 000, and of raw cotton to $5,- 600,000 from $9,200,000.
