Clustered stones in pale colors set a new mood for costume jewelry. Necklace, bracelet and earrings of beads and mock pearls. Closed pump with open look -- very new for '55. Full Skirt Still Tops For Junior Spring 1955 presents the Junior with two new silhouettes. One, the ared down princesse sheath, is more supple than last season's princesse, with a very fitted waist and a step-in closing. Many have white braid trim or strapping de- tail at the hipline. Many have com- pznion jackets, The second major silhouette, the elongated torso, is big news in every size range. It has, for jun- iors, a dropped, belted waistline releasing fuller skirts. Some fea- ture double pleated flounces or one hemline flounce. . The juniors will have more cos- tumes than ever before. Their full- er skirts are pleated -- either all- round or sectlonally. Some are gathered or else gored and flared, to be worn with petticoats. SLIM LINE JACKETS The costumes are accompanied by jackets and coats that feature a slim, sparse line. Fitted or straight, they end at the bust-line, Semi-fitted, they follow the long, lean line over the long torso styles. Costumes also sport "invisible" jackets to the bust, waist or hip; flyaway boleros or middy over blouse jackets. Many dress and jacket costumes hide after-five bodices underneath, while many feature the new su- spender skirts. CUMMERBUNDS FAVORED : Suit jackets follow the line of the eostume's fly-away bolero or long, lean jackets. Suits also show tapered box jackets, modified bed jackets and above the waist briefs. Suit skirts are either full or slend- er, with many of the fuller skirts leated. The bund-wrapped midriff is popular. The shirt-look dress is promin- ent again this spring, often in print. Two-piece dresses and coat dresses feature pockets, pockets and more pockets. Jumpers are seen fre- quently. Junior playcothes go particular- ly blithe with suspender shorts, Bermuda skirts with bright under- shorts or romper playsuits with with Bermuda-length over-skirts. Throughout the playclothes line, the color accent is on red. SUPPLE FABRICS Sheer rayon or crepe is being used increasingly in junior wear, its suppleness offsetting the long- line silhouette. Cotton and cotton- silk blends are important, while imported cotton tweeds are the fabric news in spring suits. Navy is the key color for spring. Gold, avocado green and periwinkle blue are also popular. Stripes and checks are more im- portant than ever. Much junior fashion will have "lingerie" trimming. Frothy white accessories complement dark cos- tumes. There is lots of lace in jabots, dickies and collars. SHORT SUCCESS STORY Walking shorts are due to surge altead for resort and casual wear, this year. Colors will range from dark to light for co-ordination with sport shirts, slacks, sport jackets. Dark and Light Dark colors are favored in the new warm weather wool tropical suits. This trimly tailored, num- ber is in navy blue with a faint horizontal slub pattern in light blue. Note the cooler two-button closing combined "with narrow lapels. Sportswear Is Colorful For Spring As mere and more men enjoy lengthened hours of leisure, sports wear looms ever larger in the fashion picture. This spring, the man who wishes to round out and up-date his casual wardrobe can choose from a completely new range of clear, clean colors, new fabrics and a sharply changed group of designs adapted to specif- ic sports and lesire activities. The new sport coats feature light- er weights in wool and man-made fiber blends, tweeds and shetlands in herring bone checks) fibre- ene effects, nubs and slubs. Many coat fabrics combine color patterns with weave or texture pat- terns. Deep shades relieved by A crisp, buoyant look dominates the fabric picture for spring '55. As the lines of fashion become simpler, the weaves and finishes ol fabrics b by t more fl A Eye-catching novelties with a rich look are the new-season favorites. Springy softness is everywhere. Two requisites that Jesigners in- sist upon are fine quality and gn weight. As easy washability - comes increasingly important to the American woman, more cate- ories of fabrics conform to care- ree wear-and-wash standards. Linens and linen-like weaves are everywhere, looking newest with slubbing, embroidery and printed patterns. Crush-resistant plaid lin- ens appear in suits and coats as well as dresses. Silk-and-worsted and silk-and-viscose mixtures join style leaders. Popular combine- tions are black and pink, black and helio, cognac and deep brown. Stylewise, the single - breasted, two button sport coat continues to lead, although the three-button model is gaining ground, especially among younger men, Both patch and flap pockets are shown in the new sport coats. PINK IS IMPORTANT Pink is an important new pastel in sport coats and slacks. Light- weight worsted wool gabardine slacks in pink are another instance of this color's new popularity. They are intended to be worn with sport coats of colors other than pink. Other favored colors in slacks to go with dark colored jackets are yellow, mint green and helio. Slacks in lightweight flannel, wool and blends with Orlon, gabar- dine and covert are shown in solids, subdued checks. twill weaves. slubs and nubs. The new slacks are pleatless with back buckle and strap. The trend is to trim, tapered lines. The new blouse-type jackets for spring have adopted an entirely new tone, Colors are the brightest ever shown and novelty prints are solidly entrenched. Almost any pas- tel color that can be named is being used -- pink, helio, light blue, mint green, orange shades yellows. NOVELTY PATTERN One of the most successful of the novelty patterns is achieved by the flocking treatment (flocks of wool or rayon applied to a fabric rather than woven into it). These flocks have been combined with printed motifs to give a colorful chest or zipper panel stripe. Spac- ed prints in all over patterns have worthy innovation in the depart- ment is an all-over argyle print on sheen gabardine. Washability is now recognized as an important asset in spring outerwear and this quality is cose, acetate and linen fabrics. The leisure coat is making a fashion scene this spring. Offered in wools, rayons and linens, the coats have zipper fronts, half belts or full belts, Linen and Tweed Lead Spring Fabric Parade on the rust side, cognac and sandy spun rayon in the linen - effect group. Linen newly blended with wool makes an exciting coat and cos- tume fabric that resembles Italian raw silk in light weight and rough surface. Straw-mat and silk are popular wool blends, while tweed takes the lead in extremely light- weight all wool. Random tweeds, from crisp and nubby to soft and fine are seen most; but there is a generous supply of herringbones and other patterns with quite smooth surfaces. Slubby. weaves look most im- portant in basic wools, such as tissue-weight flannels, but a tend- ency to sheen types appears in the large crop of serge, twill and gab- ardine. Pleated novelty cottons, bord- er-design prints and unusual all- over prints share the spring spot- light with crinkle cottons. Solid color crinkle cotton blouses that don't need ironing are paired with new-looking printed skirts on such grounds as pique, cotton satin, twill and linen-weave cottons. Sport cottons favor denim, sail- cloth, corduroy, twill and te cloth, while dress cottons are thic tel di ks and br Cotton satin will be everywhere. Cotton coats and suits make a big story, using the heavier weights and glossy surfaces.
