PLATE CONTENDERS READY FOR BIG These three are leading con- tenders for the 96th running of the Oueen's Plate June 11 at .Woedbine race track in Toron- to. Left to right: Ace Marine, NO REAL FAVORITE owned by Larkin Maloney, To- ronto; Silver Spat, owned by Adam Adams of Winnipeg; and Senator Jim, owned by Stafford Farms, Toronto, 'All three won RACE SATURDAY their respective divisions of the three-way Plate trials at one mile and 70 yards. The Plate distance is 1 1/8 miles. (CP Photo) ~The 96th Running Of Queen's Plate Appears To Be A Wide Open Affair TORONTO (CP)--The 96th run- ning of the $20,000-added Queen's Plate is only four days away and there isn't an outstanding favorite in the field. } Six or so thoroughbreds are ranked as outsiders for the 1%- mile elassic at Woodbine Race- track Saturday. Much of the big money is going on the stretch - running Senator Jim, a grey colt who is being quoted at 5to-2 odds to win the event for the Stafford Farms of Toronto. Seventeen candidates are likely to go postward in the race for the Queen's 50 guineas but the feeling is that only about 10 of them be- long in the same company with such outstanding three-year-olds as Senator Jim, Toronto owned Loyalist and Ace Marine. HOPE FOR UPSET Thursday just to see their colors on parade before the 15,000-odd fans who are expected to jam into old Woodbine. Then again, there's always the chance of a Stuuiing upset. But history is against it. In the last 30 years, only four - longshots have won and kicked back more than $8.70 for a $2 ticket. They were Maternal Price, who paid $193.35 in. 1924, ' Paolita, who returned $76.50 in 1943, Mdldy, $36.50 in 1947, and® Epigram $25.05 three years ago. If 16 horses start the gross purse will be $32,395. The experts say a field of this size would aid fast- breaking horses such as Baffin Bay, a filly owned by Mrs. R. Y. Graul Jr. of Montreal, and Ace Marine, Larkin Maloney's bay colt who was the only double winner of the two sets of plate trials. ACE MARINE THIRD Some owners apparently are will- ing to pay the final $250 entry fee Baffin Bay has been jumping around at odds of from 10 to 1 to 20 to 1. Ace Marine is the third choice at 5 to 1. Second choice at 4 to 1 is Loyalist, the highly touted brown gelding who failed to win in the Plate trials but is expected to give a good t of hi If Sagiive fo stay longer than a day 0. or Arrangements are also in hand for the traditional Grey Cup side- lights. The Junior Chamber of Com- merce will organize the Miss Grey Cup contest. The ad and sales bureau of the Board of Tr hopes to match Toronto's total of nearly 100 floats in the parade last year and says it has heard that 10 or 12 Montreal and Toronto com- pahies are planning entries. About ,000 persons are expected tend the biggest Grey Cup dinner yet and see awards made to men who have contributed to the growth of football in Canada. "We're foing to assure every- body there'll be plenty of accommo- dation in Vancouver for the big evevnt," said Clancey. The committee will set up abur- eau to handle any inquiries on accommodation and hotels will for- ward applications to it when they are filled. Harry "The Hat" Walker Gives Credit To Bats .. PHILADELPHIA (AP -- Harry (The Hat Walker, the new St. Louis Cardinal manager, says it's the lighter bat rather than a more lively ball that is producing more major league home runs. ' Walker sounded of on sundry baseball topics after Wednesday night's game with Philadelphia Phillies was postponed because of rain. He said it is "a lot of nonsense" to suggest that more homers are the result of a lively ball. "It's the bats these guys use," he said. "They're like buggy whips They swing those bats so much faster than the old 38-to-42-ounce bats that when they connect the STANDARD 38 Fc FREE DISHES With Every 6 Gal. of Gas or More at the: LAKEVIEW PARK STATION 1615 SIMCOE §. Vancouver Will Be 1955 Grid Capital By DAVID ROWNTREE Canadian Press Staff Writer VANCOUVER (CP)--Let no one forget. This upstart west coast city is 8 analE's football capital for 1 Having wooed and won the Cana- dian Rugby Union to switch the lo- cation of the Grey Cup final from east to west for the first time since the classic became national in 1921 local football men and civie officials are borrowing Holly- wood superlatives to describe what the event is going to be like next November. If Grey Cup time in Toronto was | terrific, it will be fabulous in Van- couver. If the fun and football were spread over two days in the East, | there's every chance it will last | four days, maybe a week, here. If | eastern hospitality has been great, | western hospitality will be tremen- | dous, MAYOR 18 CHAIRMAN { Guiding entertainment activities | in conjunction with the Nov. 26 game is the Grey Cup festival com- | _ mittee under the general chairman- | ship of ayor Fred Hume. Fifteen | sub-committees have been set up | to handle various parts of the pro- | gram | "What we want," says Mayor | Hume, "is to be able to put on | the biggest Grey Cup show vet, | to 'demonstrate the hospitality of | our people, and then go to city | council and say: 'It didn't cost you | a cent." | Phe mayor proposed as one way of financing the festival to invite | pianist Liberace to town for a ser- | ies of concerts. "He would be a| great drawing card," Mr. Hume said. Bill Clancey, a director of the year-old British Columbia Lions football club, tells of the other ideas thrown into the suggesiton box for Grey Cup Week, | FIREWORKS, SALMON BAKE | "We've got the biggest China-| town in Canada," he said, '"'and| we're asking the Chinese if they | would put on a display of fireworks | and dances in their section of the city." Fishing and lumbering are the province's two big industries, Fish- ing interests are being asked to organize an Indian salmon bake on a downtown square complete with costumes and ceremonial dances. Loggers could give demon- strations of rolling, high-rigging and bucking. "Then there's a suggestion to have a western day," says Clancey, "with people from Calgary, Ed- monton, Regina and Winnipeg doing square dances in the streets. The idea would be to cepture the same sort of atmosphere as the Calgary Stampede." Mayor Hume has proposed in- viting units of the United States and Royal Canadian navies to port during the football, classic so that their bands and men could join the parades. Flag-raising ceremonies, torch- light band parades, a sailpast of yachts, a bonspiel, fishing derby and golf tournament have all been suggested to attract visitors to Van- couver and give them some in- MY HUSBAND BOUGHT (ri IT FROM OUR RETAIL F HARDWARE DEALER | { f TO DO YARD WORK-- and Windermere and Merry Life also worked out-and did the mile in Silver Spat, surprise Plate trial winner owned by Andy Adams of inger; ders; Floa Lures, COMPLETE--At Canadian 'ackle Box; 50-yd.
