NL "Scugog 's Community Newspaper of Choice The Malmont "As"' still on their road trip travelled to Port Hope for a league game with the Port Hope Redmen. Port Hope started the game quickly putting the ressure on the\Malmont arm eam right off the bat. Both teams matched each other stride for stride with both goalies at each end of the rink doing a good job. At 6:46 of the first period and Port Hope applying pressure Port Hope took a bad angle shot heading for the upper corner and the Malmont goalie, Daniel Lee made a nice glove save to keep the game scoreless. The Malmont team finally got.-to the Port Hope goalie when Scott Jotiiey put a nice pass to the side of the Port Hope goal to Seth Gray, who forc- ed the goalie to come out to cut down the angle, over to Dillan Weber who was looking at an empty net and "in she goes' to put the Malmont Farm team ahead 1-0. & The line of Sheehey, Gray, Lyons and Harper again did a ood job of killing off penalties. ith Port Hope having the edge in the shots department 10-7 in the first period Malmont Farms was still ahead 1-0 after one period of lay. The power play unit of eber, Gray, Campbell, Jeffrey and Harper did a good job of sen-- ding a steady hail of rubber at the Port Hope goalie. , The Malmont "As" were mat- ching Port Hope line for line and rush for rush and doing a good job until the 5:21 mark of the second eriod when Port Hope put ether a nice three way Jassing play and from the faceoff circle pul a nice shot high in the corner o beat the Malmont goalie who didn't have a chance on the hard drive from close range. In the second period the forecheckers Brad Johnston and Tweens This must have been the weekend Allen Siding Products Tweens were waiting for to show they had the winning touch. What a great time to pull it off...in Port's own "Country Style" tournament. The first game on Friday night against Oshawa began on a high note and the girls barely missed a beat the rest of the weekend. In each of the two periods of this ame, Port scored twice and hawa managed to squeak one through. Playing before a large crowd, Cara Vander Slagt made a beautiful pass to Laura who fired it hi to light up the scoreboard. Brandy Harris strategically scored the next goal followed by Shona Moase and Cara. The assists went to Dana Hooker, Lynda Payne, Laura and a pair to Heather Tredway. 4-2 for Port. With a win under their belts the Allen Siding girls headed to Sunderland arena early Saturday morning to play Ajax. They were anxious for another win and were not long showing it. Cara and Lyn- da set Laura up for the first goal. Then, Lynda again assisted Bran- dy's goal. Number three goal was scored unassisted by Heather on a hard shot. Entering into the second period on the winning side of a 3-1 score the defense didn't let their guard down. Bonni-Jo Norton, Melissa Pereman, Shona Moase and Jen- ny Storms played an excellent defensive game defending Katie Senyk in net. It wasn't until the 1:30 mark that the tables turned. With a couple of Port mistakes and a penalty, Ajax scored. With tension rising, they scored again at the 52 second mark to tie the game 3-3. The girls approached the third game knowing they had to win or tie to stay in the running for the finals. Getting off to a bad start they let this "unknown" Scar- borough team take a 3-0 lead. We're not really sure what pe {0 Malmont Atom As play to 'a 2-2 tie in Port Hope Justin Sheehey did a good job. The second period ended 2-1 for Port hope. The third period was a fast moving period with the goalies getting a prot good workout. gain both teams were pretty well even for the first three minutes of the third period when the Malmont As started to get the bounces going their vay and unleashed some pretty heavy shots from in close by Seth Gray Derek Tindall, Tro Campbell and Danny Lyons. With the third period winding down and Mal- mont Farms behind 2-1, "Jonesie" grabbed the: puck at centre ice, stick handled down the left wing and had more moves than United Van Lines, went behind the Port Hope net and beat the goalie on a neat wrap around to tie the game at two a piece. Malmont Farms kept the pressure up but couldn't squeeze out another goal before the horn sounded to end the game with these two fine hockey clubs skating to a two all draw. With two of the regular blue liners out of the line up (Casey Van Schagen and Justin Kowalczyk), Scott Jeffrey and Seth Gray were used to try and fill in the hole in the defensive unit. These two guys did a good job at playing defense seeing this isn't Ir regular positions. Nice going ys. Shots on goal were 22-22. Honorable mention for "good hustle" goes to Brad Johnston (forechecking). Honorable mention for "good defencive effort" goes to Jeff Ashton. As Steve Lee says "nice shutout Corey!"' Remember: When a team plays as a team they are very rarely defeated. Together we stand - divided we fall!! win big coaches Senyk and Hooker threatened between periods but W-O-W, what a display of ringette that followed. Bonnie bull-dozed through to assist on Lynda's first goal. after Dana set Shona up for goal No. two. Lynda and Laura assisted on Brandy's tie breaker at the 6:25 mark. Fifteen seconds later, Scarborough scored again. The next six minutes were a Killer for the Port teams and their fans. With only 34 seconds remaining, Cara made a timely pass to Shona who got a lightning shot away to tie the game 4-4! Off to the finals unday. The championship game was against a regular league opponent - Ajax. This was a fast paced end to end game with Port holding the edge throughout. Melissa Pereman backchecked on a breakaway much to Katie's relief. Jenny Storms was a '"'power- house." She single handedly kept three Ajax players from her ring while killing a penalty for over a minute. Bonni-Jo and Shona were a wicked duo on defense much to the Ajax team's disbelief. Laura learned a new defense tactic if playing tall girls...if you can't reach their stick go under them. Katie's moves on net were in- describable. All but two shots were sto dead, deflected or caught; Katie was superb. Each of the forwards were hot! Lynda Payne played her best game of the season, in to score two goals and assisting on one. Bran- duplicated Lynda's points. eather and Dana also clicked well this game with a goal each (Heather's being the game opener) and each of them had an assist. Jenny Storms had two big assists along with Laura and Cara picking up one each. final score 6-2 for Allen Siding Products. Special mention goes to Heather and Melissa who certain- ly displayed some new moves. An excellent tournament girls! You deserve the gold medal. JOS NO RIAAD AATIIN WOMAN
