Game Four Mariposa 4 - Port Perry 2 The third game of the day on Saturday evening saw Mariposa and Port Perry squaring off with the winner advancing to the finals against Pickering on Sunday for "all the marbles." Port didn't take this jee lightly as they came out flying, taking the play right to Mari right off the bat. Port had Mariposa trap in their own zone for the first three minutes, but the Mariposa goalie stood her ground allowing nothing to go in at this point of the game. ort lit the scoreboard up first when Joan Anderson intercepted a clearing pass deep in the Mariposa zone and 'see you later" she buried it deep into the back of the goal for an early Port Perry lead. Port and Mariposa traded rushes giving each others goalie a good workout. At 4:11 of the first period Mariposa had Port Perry on the ropes and firing lots of rubber at Port's goalie Christie Aldridge, but she was "hot" stop- ping "count them" 1-2-3-4 shots In a row to turn the Mariposa of- fence away shaking their heads. Finally at 2:26 Mariposa got to the Port goalie and fired a low shot to . the far corner to tie the game at one a piece. This game was begin- ning to look as if it would be a "real barn burner' as the horn sounded to end the first period with both teams deadlocked at one. Port Perry's defence had done a good job all day keeping first Mariposa in the morning to only one goal and Pickering at three o'clock to only two. Mariposa got the second period off to a quick start when they scored at 14:22 on a good give and go, beating the Port goalie on a hard shot from in close to go ahead 2-1. At 7:04 Port's goalie made a good save but in the process pulled a mus- cle as Mari tucked one under Christie with her already bein down on the first save to go ahea 3-1. It looked for a while as if the back up' goalie Michele Bran- ton would brought into the game to replace a hurt Christie dridge, but after a brief huddle she "dug down deep" and stayed in the game. - At 3:01 Natasha Burgess hit Cindy Verschurren in front with a nice pass and the rest is history as the ring went past the Mariposa goalie in a hurry to close the gap to 3-2. Port had con- Juveniles On Saturday, Jan. 4, Port Perry Key Bar Office Equipment Juveniles took part in a tourna- ment at Glencoe, northwest of London. Jody Wright opened the scoring in the first period with an unassisted goal resulting from a slap shot from just outside his own blue line. Port put together two good last minute rushes but they were too little, too late. Port Perry's Pineridge Sports Tween '"B" represented Port Perry Ringette very well. They kept each game close and™ respectable. Nice tournament girls. Remember: I alone cannot win a game, but we always can. onorable mention for "good hustle" goes to Michele Branton. Thanks to some foolish Wexford penalties in the second frame, Port got an extended chance to play five on three. Key Bar took advantage of the opportunity and came up with four unassisted goals in the period. . Jay Heyes got the first two goals with Jason Towns assisting on both and Mike Sorley assisting on the second. Gerry Douma assisted by Mike Sorley made it 3-2. Derek Fitzgerald got the fourth goal with Douma and Sorley getting the assists. Wex- ford got another goal but Mike Sorley shut the door with an unassisted marker at the end of the second. Port Perry came away with an easy 7-3 vic- tory, despite picking up 40 minutes in benaitios including two misconducts. Goal scorers were Mike Sorley with three goals and two assists. Gerry Douma with two goals, Ethan Lavereau with two goals, Steve Staniland with two assists. Single assists went to Scott Men- zies, Greg Fitzgerald and Derek Fitzgerald. Captain Mike Sorle who saw a lot of ice time in all three games showed great stamina and played well. Defensemen Jody Wright, Steve Staniland, Jason Towns and Greg Fitzgerald were instrumen- tal in all three Key Bar victories, especiall Considering the number of penalties they ha to kill. All four contributed on the scoreboard as well as defensive- ly. Congratulations to the entire Key Bar team on their victory! First tournament of the year a learning experience for Eaglettes The XL Gas Bar Eaglettes opened the annual Port Perry Ringette Tournament against the stronger Whitby # 1 squad. Having lost previously to this team 9-3, the girls knew going in if they didn't stop Whitby's # 9 it very well could be a repeat performance. The Eaglettes started slow but were skating and checking. well enough to keep Whitby off the score sheet for half of the first period. Late in the first the thorn started to prickle when Whitby's # 9 popped two behind Alicia Burgess who was getting blue spots on her uniform from all the rings she was stopping. The thorn made it 4-0 in Whitby's favor before Miranda Burgess pulled Port into strik- ing distance with two goals on the same shift. The first was a solo effort, the second was a pretty set-up by Alaina Burger. Port's play was getting stronger and stronger as the game progressed and these two goals lit a fire that saw a flurry of shots by forwards Julia Lea- man, Melissa Hooker, Leanne Layzell, Alaina Davis, Stacey Cunningham, Nicole Virtue and Leanne Davison. The de- fence of Sarah Verschuuren, Katherine Cooke, Janna Ostaf- fichuk, and Amy Weber held Whitby at bay until the thorn struck with an unassisted goal to put the comeback in jeopar- dy. The clincher came with five minutes left in the game to make the final score 6-2 in Whitby's favor, but the Ea- glettes played the stronger Whitby team more then even in the second period. After a good night's rest the XL Gas Bar team arrived to find their next opponent, the Picker- ing Selects had beaten Whitby 12-1. An all out effort by every- one on the team kept the score of our second game to 11-1. Very respectable considering the pre- vious tournament results. Melissa Hooker broke the goose egg on an excellent pass- ing play up the boards from Katherine Cooke to Leanne Davison who fed Melissa who deked the defence and put the ring into the upper corner. e final game saw the XL Gas Bar Faglettes "pitted against the Whitby # 2 group. A tremendous pre-game cheer syched Port for a strong start. Miranda took the opening free pass and slotted to Melissa who just nine seconds into the game gave Port an early lead. On her next shift, Miranda received a nice pass from Nicole to make it 2-0. Melissa put Katherine's pass into the net, 3-0. Port seemed to be on its way when Whitby struck back to make it 3-1. At this point, Alicia was taken off the ice with a mild concussion. She had fallen in the barrage of shots late in the Pickering game and hit her head. Sarah again volunteered and was quickly readied for goaltending duty. Play resumed with Port having possession and Julia notched Port to a 4-1 lead. In just two minutes Whitby tied the score, taking advantage of Sarah before she could settle in. Obviously rattled, Port fell behind 5-4 before Leanne Davi- son got the Eaglettes back on track with a quick breakout started by Julia to Melissa in the centre ice area who led Leanne on a breakwaway. Julia put Port ahead on another of Melissa's excellent passes. The lead was short-lived as Whitby evened the score with 1:52 re- maining. With Whitby applying pres- sure to get the winner the coaches called a time out to break the momentum and to get the best five of the game on the ice. Despite two free passes the ring did not come out of our end and the Eaglettes held on for a 6-6 tie. A "just" finish for these two teams. Our first tournament of the year proved to be a tremendous learning experience and will set the tone for an exciting second half of the season. IGA Juniors start off the New Year with a win over Ajax The Port Perry I.G.A. Juniors started off the new year on the right skate with a win over the Ajax Home Hardware Team on home ice last Sunday. Within 30 seconds of the ini- tial blast of the whistle Ajax "A" Southgate's aim found its mark and the first goal was scored. Less than a minute later Lind- sey Patton took control of the ring, passing it over to Sarah Coyne and our first goal was achieved. Ajax retaliated with an unassisted goal but Sarah was hot for another goal and on a pass from Heather Lally and Julie Ball, she made it look so easy as she popped in our sec- ond goal. Ajax scored again. It was sort of a see-saw game as Heather scored our third goal, assisted by Deanna Dempsey. Lisa Dodd picked up a pass from Vicki Stainton and goal number four was scored. Within a min- ute left in the first half Vicki gave us another goal, assisted by Lindsey and Julie. At the end io the first half Port was ahead -3. Seconds into the second half Lindsey made a beauty of a goal, unassisted. Back and forth the ring went. Amy Sinclair, our goalie was right on cue in net, resisting Ajax advances. Sarah Coyne picked up the ring from Lindsey and earned her first hat trick of the season. A min- ute later Heather picked up the ring on passes from Sarah and Kyla McCrea. With two min- utes left in the period Deanna Dempsey netted a beauty on a pass from Julie. Ajax managed to squeeze in two more goals. With 35 seconds left in the game Kyla was fed the ring from her teammates Deanna and Julie and the final goal was scored withease. bY Our next game is this Wednesday at the Don Beare Arenain Pickering. Keep up the good work girls and see you on theice.
