The afternoon event gave Mr. Stevenson, (centre) a chance to meet his constituents and wish them a happy new year. McColm back on the road After a break for Christmas and some medical attention, Ken McColm is back on the road again. Since March, Mr. McColm has been walking across Cana- da to raise money for diabetes research, the disease which blinded him three years ago. It is Mr. McColm's hope to raise $1 million. Mr. McColm was forced to take a break from the "Incredi- ble Journey" in mid-December when he was hospitalized due to complications from diabetes. Dave Mann, a member of the Durham Regional Police in Port Perry and Mr. McColm's cousin, said he was admitted to St. Mi- chaels Hospital in Toronto for treatment. He then spent Christmas with his parents in Gaspe, Que- bec before resuming his trek in Thunder BayonJan. 8. Mr. Mann, who spoke to his cousin during Christmas, says despite the set back Mr. McColm is prepared to "keep truckingon." On Jan. 8 Mr. McColm was presented with a bus donated by Greyhound Lines of Canada to be used for the journey. The "Incredible Journey" be- gan in March in Newfoundland and will cross Canada, ending in Victoria, British Columbia on Victoria Day. Mr. McColm re- laxed for a couple of days in Port Perry with Mr. Mann during the Canada Day weekend. Theft angers police The theft of a piece of equip- ment from the Community Me- morial Hospital in Port Perry has raised the temperature of local police. According to Durham Region- al Police, a Temperature Genius infra-red tymtanic thermome- ter was taken from Community Memorial Hospital on Jan. 7. The approximate value of the itemis $800. Staff Sergeant Bill VanDole- weerd was angered by the theft. "I can't believe anybody would steal something like this from a hospital," he said. Staff Sergeant VanDole- weerd said the item has no val- ue to anybody other than a hos- pital or a medical clinic.
