"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Scugog Township rock group Many musicians dream of someday hearing their music on the radio. to enter Homegrown Contest SB For four Scugog musicians® who make up the rock 'n' roll band The Pulse, that dream has me a reality. Group members Kevin Fergu- son, Glenn Page, Emitt Kuyt and Scott Gales had their dream realized Sunday when two Ontario radio stations gave airtime to The Pulse. According to Mr. Ferguson, the group found out late last week that it would be one of the featured groups on "Canada's New Rock," a Sunday morning program on Q107 in Toronto which features independent Ca- nadian artists. Disc jockey Al Joynes gave a small bio on the band and then played "Can't Get, U Outa My Mind." The University of Ottawa ra- dio station also played one of The Pulse's songs on Sunday. Mr. Gales met one of the sta- tion's disc jockeys while visiting Ottawa on the weekend. He gave him a tape of the band's music and. was thrilled when "Itchy Feet" hit the airwaves on Sunday. Receiving airtime is quite an accomplishment for the newly- formed band. The Pulse formed last sum- mer after Mr. Ferguson, a gui- tarist and songwriter, adver- tised in the newspaper that he wanted to start'a rock 'n' roll band. Drummer Glenn Page, bassist Emitt Kuyt and vocalist Scott Gales answered the adver- tisement and The Pulse was formed. The band spent its first two months together working on original material and in the fall of 1991, The Pulse recorded a nine-song demo project at Big Star Sudios in View Lake. Key- boardist Marlo Guido, who has performed with Mr. Ferguson for the past seven years, was added to the group for the re- cording and is currently per- MPP Mills to host new cable show Durham East M.P.P. Gord Mills is the host of a new televi- sion show on Cable 10. "Talking It Over With Gord," which saw the first broadcast on Jan. 8, will be shown weekly on Rogers Cable TV 10. The half- hour show will air on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. The show will feature various community groups and their ac- tivities. Kelly Phipps, constitu- ency assistant, says the show will also address issues concern- ing the constituency. The premier broadcast, shot before Christmas, concerned vi- olence against women and fea- tured Kelli Moffatt, a represen- tative from the Scugog Rape Crisis Centre. Although the show will only be available to Rogers Cable subscribers, which does not in- clude the Township of Scugog, Ms. Phipps says all groups in the constituency are welcome to submit programming ideas. Any group or club interested in the show can reach Mr. Mills' constituency office at 1-800- 661-2433. forming with the band. All the songs on the demo pro- Ject are original. Mr. Ferguson, who plays guitar and provides backup vocals, wrote the major- ity of the songs including "Can't Get U Outa My Mind," "Look What You're Doing To Me," "Dreamin," "Holding Onto The Line," "Lonely Man," and "You And I" which he co-wrote with Bruce Stone. | "Alibis" written by Mr. Kuyt, "Angel" by Scott Gales and Adam Zimmerman, and "Itchy Feet" by Wayne (Shakey) Dage- nais, round out the songs on the tape. The music is a perfect mix of rock 'n' roll, rock 'n' blues and ballads. On Feb. 2, The Pulse will be recording two more songs. Har- old Hess of the rock group Har- em Scarem will be co-producing the recording at his studio. The band will enter the two § songs in Q107's Homegrown | Contest, as well as using them in a future demo compact disc package. The group is also getting its name known by playing at nu- merous Durham Region esta- blisments. The Pulse is a fre- quent act at the Sunday Night Jam at the Purple Onion in Oshawa. . And on Sunday, Jan. 26, the group will be playing at O'Tooles, located at the corner of Simcoe Street and Taunton Road in Oshawa.
