20 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 21, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" By Kelly Lown They may not have skated down the ice as fast as they used to, but the Bantam All-Ontario team of 1976-77 proved they could still put the puck in the net as they tied the Midget All- Ontario team on Saturday night 9-9. Saturday night's match up between the Bantams.of 1977 and the Midgets of 1991 drew a large crowd of approximately 250 people to Scugog Arena. Although one could tell some of the Bantams had continued playing hockey after retiring from the minor ranks, a few were not so sturdy. Many hit the ice with skates two sizes too small, mismatched socks, and antique equipment but they still managed to hold their own. All but three of the original Bantam squad were in uniform for the match. Dave Myers was absent from the line-up Satur- day night but was at the scrim- mage Friday night and Doug Potts was absent from the line- up due to abackinjury. A moment of silence was held prior to the start of the game in memory of Mike Tobin, an origi- nal Bantam. Aside from the three missing members, the rest were in uni- form, even Darrin Jobb, Hal Storry and George Burnett had their uniforms complete with their Captain, and Assistant Captain shirts respectively. Behind the bench for the Ban- tams was the original coaching squad of Doug Scott, complete with trademark bow tie, manag- er Don Phinney and trainer Jim Burnett. Albeit, the Bantam squad had a little help from younger players Brad Menzies, Warren Geer, Steve Connors, Lee Wil- bur and Phil McBride who were asked to fill in for the missing members, the original team members did their share of the scoring. The Midget squad started off fast popping two quick goals past Bantam goalie Warren Ni- cholishen. It didn't-take the Bantams long to find their nitch as they came back with three unan- swered goals. Phil McBride scored first for the Bantams, with the assist going to Steve Connors. The next had two originals team up as Greg Kroonenberg picked up a pass from Todd Wil- bur to slipitinto the Midget net. Darrin Jobb put the Bantams in front 3-2 with assists going to Brad Menzies and Rob Cannon. The Midgets came roaring back to score two, one by Jody Logan, the other by Dan Slug- gett. Nearing the end of the third the Bantams added three more goals to the Midgets one to end the second period with the Ban- tams ahead 6-5. Scoring for the Midgets was Dan Sluggett, from Steve Laird and for the Bantams Warren Geer, from George Burnett and Steve Connors, Brad Menzies from Lee Wilbur and Dave Alex- ander and George Burnett from Brad Menzies. The fans were kept enter- tained by the valiant efforts, and comic relief provided by both teams. A few minor penalties were handed out for body contact, and tripping by referees Rob Kroonenberg and Dave Ballin- gall. The game was a non- contact, no slapshots event making it virtually impossible for any goals from the blue lines. As third period action re- sumed the Bantams were right back at it scoring two more goals. George Burnett picked up one goal, assisted by Brad Men- zies and Hal Storry and Brad Menzies picked up his second of the night assisted by George Burnett and Warren Geer. The Midgets were not done though as they popped in two more of their own, courtesy of Jason Cochrane and Steve Laird. It looked like the Bantams were going to hang on and win the match as Warren Geer scored another to make the BLUE LITE CHALLENGE ROUND January 124 o 25 © 26 © 27 See -- Our Own Barry Acton Greg Timbers Don Beaton Ron Parish Compete Against Ed Werenich - Toronto Jeff McCrady - Toronto Mike Harris - Toronto Dave Merklinger - Ottawa Bob Turcotte - Annandale Plus many more from Ottawa - Trenton - Peterborough Trying to vie for a Final Berth to the ONTARIO CURLING PLAYDOWNS.
