Little Britain wasted little time in scoring when they banged one home with only eight seconds elapsed on' the clock. Goal by Jason Jacobs from Pete waralaw. The Islanders settled in to play hockey but lacked the zip to do any scoring, but at the 12:25 mark in the first period the Isles were awarded a goal. With a delayed penalty being called against Port, the Little Britain goalie started for the bench, but the defence shot the puck into their own open net. The goal was awarded to Simon Traynor who ironically got the delayed penalty. The only other goal came at the 5:53 mark of the second when Mark Cosway converted a pass from Lindsay Parry. Final score 2-1 for Port. First playoff game was played Thursday, Jan. 16 in Pickering. These two teams are evenly mat- ched and it will be a good series. Pickering scored early to take a 1-0 lead. Late in the first period Blair Prechitko carried the puck from one end to the other and fired a bullet past the Pickering goalie. Assist to Todd Smart. Pickering scored in the second riod to take a 2-1 lead which ooked like it was going to stand up. Late in the third period the Pickering team were called for ic- ng with 25 seconds to go. The Isles pulled their goalie and with 19 seconds to go Chad Garvock scored from Steve Desautels and Mark Cosway. Final score 2-2. Saturday, Jan. 18 the Islanders travelled to Brighton for tourna- ment play. Game one was against Newmarket. This was an excitin game which found the teams tie at two at the end of regulation time. Steve Desautels scored both Port goals assists to Jason Coutoulakis and Chad Garvock. In overtime a cheap penalty allowed the opposition a penalty shot and to score a 3-2 victory The heart breaking loss put the Isles in the "B" consolation semi against Markham who previous- ly beat us 3-0. Late in the first period Markham scored two to take a 2-0 lead into the second period. The Isles played solid hockey and late in the second Jason Coutoulakis scored from Chad Garvock and Steve Desautels to make the score 2-1. At the 8:23 mark of the third Chad Garvock scored to tie the score at 2-2. Assists to Mark Cosway and Darrel Vander Slagt. Then with 1:46 left in the game Jason scored his second of the game, assists to Corey Wilson and ark Cosway. Final score 3-2 for the Islanders. What a comeback! Sunday, Jan. 19 consolation "B" final at 2 p.m. against Whit- by. This game featured solid two- way hockey by both teams, goaltending was superior, good passing and something almost unheard of - every forward backchecked and broke up play after play. At the end of regulation time the score was 0-0. First overtime period elapsed, still tied, second overtime elapsed, still tied. Final- ly at 1:12 of the third overtime period Scott Airey dashed down the left side and centered the puck to Noah St. Amand who scored to give Can Tire a well earned 1-0 victory. MVP was Rick Hutchinson for Port and Whitby MVP was their goalie Tony Currie. Congratula- tions boys. Pineridge Atom Bs win 3-2 The Pineridge Atom B team faired well this past week bring- ing home two victories. On Thurs- day night Port hosted an Oshawa team for an exhibition game. In this game Dave Gainey quickly got on the scoreboard when Ye received a pass from Brad Monsma. Also assisting was Nick Pelyk. The score remained there till midway through the se- cond period when the offensive crew from Oshawa tied it up. Minutes later Port took over the game and cashed in with five more goals to win this game 6-2. Also scoring was Greg Bruton, Adam Hobbs, Ian Parliament and Ryan McQuade. Assisting was Adam, Ian, Ryan and Scott Sanderson. On Sunday the Pineridge boys travelled to Pov dl for their first playoff game of a round robin series with Uxbridge and Lindsay. It was evident both teams felt a win in this game would set the ground work for further playoff action. Both teams came out fly- ing on their skates and ready for action. This was clear as Port's break- at formation was at work on the ice, but was constantly shut down as Lindsay defense was on their toes. Lindsay's constant forechecking paid off as they not- ched the first marker to close out the first period. In the second period Port con- tinued to work on the puck when lan Parliament struck paydirt to tie up the game. Assisting was Adam Hobbs. The play continued with plenty of end to end action as all the goalies were extremely sharp robbing players of what was so badly needed - goals. Finally in the third period Lind- say opened up to once again take the lead. Pat quickly rallied on the ice and got tough. Scott Sanderson carried the puck around the net and put it square- ly on Adam Hobbs stick who put it where it belonged. Once again, a tie was at stake. Lindsay and Port continued to apply pressure Jsking this game a real nail iter. With less than five minutes re- maining Greg Bruton set up Ryan McQuade for the go ahead goal. Finding themselves ahead for the first time in this game, they clear- ly hung on to this victory as Lind- say pulled their goalie for an ex- tra attacker, only to find themselves out of steam. The final score 3-2 for Port. This close game showed that the Pineridge boys are in for some ood hockey and the fans are in or an exciting series. Next playoff game is Monday, Jan. 27 when Port hosts Uxbridge. Good luck! Big V victorious On Jan. 18 in Pee Wee House League action the Big V team fac- ed off against St. Andrews from Peterborough. The Big V boys have been playing inspired hockey lately AE game was to be no different as they came out flying. ' Big V put the pressure on St. Andrews and finally after numerous scoring chances Big Vv was able to get one by the St. An- drews' goalie. Noah Smith, who once again moved up to the wing from his defensive position due to a player or ugse, stole the puck and quickly fed a pass over to Kent Johnston who fired it in to put Big V on top 1-0. St. Andrews seemed to wake up at the start of the second period and began to put some pressure on the Big V boys. But Big V goalie Doug Short was having a steady game as he was able to handle the St. Andrews shooters keeping them off the board. The game was going end to end but it was Big V that jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Ryan Puckrin passed the puck to Jeremy Gibson who put the moves on the St. Andrews goalie to record the goal. With time running out in the se- cond St. Andrews got back into the game on a screen shot that found its way into the net to make it a 2-1 game. The third was all Big V as they really opened up the game. Wyatt 'Orr' Park had numerous chances to score as Kent Johnston kept feeding Wyatt the puck as he broke through the slot doing his Bobby Orr imitation but he just couldn't get one to go in. Then once again it was Ryan Puckrin over to Jeremy Gibson who blasted one under the cross-bar to put Big V up 3-1. With time winding down in the game Ryan Williamson picked the puck up deep in his own end, i Jeremy Gibson cutting through centre ice and made the perfect pass to put him in all alone. Jeremy broke in and made no mistake picking up the hat trick and giving his team a 4-1 lead which was to be the final score. Once again enough cannot be said about the inpressive play of Big Vs defencemen, 'Big' Nick Skerratt, Wyatt 'Orr' Park, Ryan Williamson and Luke Newman.
