24 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 11, 1992 The Royal Bank held their 17th annual bonspiel a \ i t Port Perry Curling Club Saturday night. Could wrap up series Tuesday Modacks take first three games of opening round By Al Bailey For the first three games in a best-of-seven Central Ontario Junior 'C' playoff series against the Lakefield Chiefs, Port Perry Mo- Jacks' goaltender Ian Cooper has been simply sensational. Cooper, who was picked up by the MoJacks at the beginning of the season after Bowmanville Eagles gave him his walking papers, has proved to be a godsend for the local club, helping capture first place over-all in regular-season play, and now he appears poised to do the same thing in the playoffs. Thursday night at home in the Scugog Arena the MoJacks romped to an 8-4 victory over the Chiefs. On Friday they paid a visit to the Lakefield Arena and came away with a close 4-2 win, scoring the in- surance marker late in the third period into an empty net. And Sun- day night back in Port Perry, Cooper played his finest game of the season so far, registering a 5-9 shutout. This series could easily be over in four straight games tonight (Tues- day) when the MoJacks and Chiefs go at it again in Lakefield. If the Mo- Jacks win, they will gain a bye into a league final series. That means they'll be idle for a couple of weeks awaiting the outcome of playoffs between Little Britain Merchants and Uxbridge Bruins, and Cobourg Cougars and Bowmanville Eagles. And then the MoJacks will have to await a best-of-seven series between the winners of these playoffs. Prior to Sunday's game, Little Britain and Cobourg were leading their respec- tive series two games to nil. However, should Lakefield beat the MoJacks tonight in Lakefield and prolong the series, a fifth game will be held in Port Perry this Thursday night. A bye in the final round could be a blessing or a curse for the Mo- Jacks. On one hand thev'll get a rest, but if they hope to advance to the provincial playdowns they'll have to remain sharp. Chiefs Shut Out Sunday night's game began as a low-scoring relatively penalty-free match. Jim Vernon opened the scoring just past the midway point of the first period, finishing off a neat passing play from John Lally. It was the only goal of the period. MoJacks' Captain Brad Menzies, assisted by Lally, gave the Port squad a 2-0 lead at the 3:34 mark of the second, and the resultant scram- ble in front of the Chiefs' net resulted in a leg injury to Lakefield starting goalie Mark Johnson, who had to leave the game. He was replaced by back-up goaltender Greg Simons. Just over two minutes later, Jarett Harman, assisted by Peter Young and Clair Cornish, made it 3-0 and at 10:18, Scott Erickson chased a Jeff Barr shot behind the Chief's cage, dug out the puck and performed an ultra-neat wrap- around beating Simons on the short side. And just past the half-way point of the third period, and playing short- handed, Vernon stripped a Lakefield defenceman of the puck, charged down the ice on a breakaway and deked Simons out of his socks for his second goal of the night. FFor the rest of the game most of the fans remained in their seats to see if Cooper could come up with the shutout. The Chiefs made it in- teresting, but he made scintillating save after save and truly earned it. Although the MoJacks won the game 5-0, Cooper faced 35 shots on goal, while both Lakefield goalies faced 34 shots. After the buzzer sounded to end the game, a couple of fights broke out, but the referee and linesmen managed to separate the par- ticipants before any real damage was done. Scouting Mission? George Burnett, coach of the Niagara Falls Junior 'A' club in the Ontario Hockey League, was back home in Port Perry Sunday night to have a look at some of the midget age players on the MoJacks. Second Victory Cooper's proficiency as a net- minder really came into the fore Friday night in Lakefield as he fac- Ian Cooper Outstanding in goal ed 34 shots by the Chiefs, while Johnson in the Chiefs' cage had on- ly 21 shots to handle. Yet Port Perry managed a 4-2 win. With the game only 47 seconds old, Brian Shelfoon was penalized for holding and Mike Mundell, assisted by Scott Booth and Mike Markwick, gave Lakefield an early lead with a power-play goal. Turnto Page 29 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Key Bar Juveniles advance to next round of playoffs On Monday, Feb. 3 Port Perry Key Bar Office Equipment Juveniles took a three game-to one lead in their opening, round of playoffs by defeating Uxbridge 3-1. The contest featured great goaltending, speed and toughness from both teams. Fans were on the edge of their seats with the outcome of the game up in the air until the last half of the third period when Port took the 3-1 lead. Shortly after the goal the game was called because of an 11 p.m. curfew. This may have been fortunate because the hockey game was deferiorating rapidly from rough to nasty, especially around the Uxbridge net. Uxbridge opened the scoring in the first period and despite several good chances from Key Bar the Ux- bridge goaltender held Port off un- til less than two minutes remained in the second frame. Jan Heyes who was parked in front of the net scored on a pass from Mike Sorley. Derek Fitzgerald also picked up an assist on the goal. Key Bar took the lead early in the third on a great shot from Ethan Lavereau. assists went to Mike Sorley and Derek Fitzgerald. The clincher came on an unassisted blast from Steve Staniland on the point with Menzies screening the goalie. The game was a fine team effort with some noticeable improvement In passing. When Port plays as a team, they play exciting hockey and win games. Port has a powerhouse of a team this year and should do well in their quest for an All-Ontario title. More fan support would be ap- preciated by the team. Port Perry Key Bar Office Equip- ment played host to Uxbridge on Wednesday, Feb. 5 for the fifth match in the best of seven series between the teams. Port Perry defeated Uxbridge 5-1 to take the series four games to one and earn the right to move on to their next opponents. As of now, the team doesn't know when or against whom the next series will take place but Port are ready for anyone and confident of going all the way to an All-Ontario title. The game on Wednesday did not have the excitement of the previous matches between the two teams. Uxbridge lacked the sparkle and toughness they had exhibited in the game Monday night. Fortunately, for Port Perry, the Uxbridge goaltending was not as much a fac- tor as it has been. On the other hand, Ray Doyle continued to play superb for Key Bar. Port Perry dominated the game with Uxbridge picking up their lone goal with three minutes left in the game. Goal scorers for Port Perry were Todd Taylor with two and Ethan Lavereau, Jeff Brett and Jan Heyes with singles. Assists went to Jason Towns, Jerry Douma, Greg Fit- zgerald, Scott Porter and John En- nis. Congratulations Port Perry and good luck in the remainder of the playoffs! Malmont Atom As defeat Cobourg 6-0 to win playoff series With the heavy metal music playing and the players warm- ing up it was evident the boys wanted to wrap up the series in Port because nobody wanted to zo back to Cobourg for game #5. The game was off to another fast start with both teams play- ing excellent defencive hockey, keeping each other off the score sheet. Port was going into their skating game again at this point and at 2:15 of period one, Dillan Weber took the play into the Cobourg zone, into the slot, back to Justin Kowalczyk who shot alow hard screen shot past the Cobourg goalie to give Port the early lead 1-0. At 1:52 Casey VanSchagen fed a pass to justin Sheehey, over to Danny Lyons going down the right boards and fired a hard shot past the Cobourg goalie for a 2-0 lead. With 0:47 left in period one and Port in control Troy Campbell set up a tic-tac-toe play with Dillan We- ber, over to Seth Gray and the referee had to reach to the back ofthe net to retrieve the puck. The first period came to an end with Port out shooting Co- bourg 9-1. Playing in goal for Port was Daniel Lee. The sec- ond period was mostly played in the neutral zone. Port and Co- bourg both had four shots on goal in period two. Port opened the third period up at 13:36 when Troy Camp- bell hit Dillan Weber with a nice pass deep in the Cobourg end of the rink, over to Seth Gray in front and Hello Dolly, the home town hereos were in front 4-0. With Ports goalie Daniel Lee playing well and the team in front of him playing good play off hockey, things were in con- trol. Troy Campbell hit Seth Gray at centre with a pass over to Dillon Weber and he blew one past the Cobourg goalie. Port was playing good posi- tional well coached hockey and forcing Cobourg to gamble more than they wanted to. With 0:33 left in the game, Dillon Weber set up Troy Campbell in the slot, over to Seth Gray and "say good nite Ralph," she's all over. Both teams met at centre ice with a good sports gesture, shook each others hand as all real good teams do. After the teams were off the ice, let it be noted, the coaches from Co- bourg led their team down the hall to the Port Perry dressing room to wish the Port team all the best in the next round. How do you like that? There are real sports out there. Shots in period three, Port Perry 19, Cobourg 4. Total shots in game #4, Port Perry 32, Co- bourg 9. Port Perry 6, Cobourg 0. Daniel Lee registered the shut out for Port Perry. Nice go- ing Daniel.
