"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" ROBBERY One of the most barefaced robberies known in this sec- tion of the country was per- petrated at Manchester on Saturday last -- The follow- ing are the particulars, as far as we can learn them: -- at about 3 o'clock a.m., the storehouse occupied by Mr. T. Myers, who is buyin wheat for R.E. Perry, Esq. o Whitby, was forced open, to- ether with the office door. he safe was taken there- from, carried some 200 yards around the field which the storehouse stands in; and, coming on Centre Road, where a sleigh stood waiting, they placed it upon the vehicle and drove about two-and-a-half miles up the road, to the thickest part of the swamp. Here, with a large hammer or axe, they broke open the iron chest, took the cash from the cash box and contents - about $200 in silver -- and left the safe in the snow. No clue has, as yet, been found; but it is thought the guilty parties are living in Man- chester. "I find it very discouraging," she said. Councillor Christie said with the cancellation of the program the government will "let them chomp their way through the province." Uxbridge Mayor Gerri-Lynn O'Connor was equally con- cerned about the situation and said she 'fears the future of the Oak Ridge Moraineis at stake. Mayor O'Connor says the gov- ernment's decision has "major ramifications on the moraine." She points to the fact that there is a 50 per cent higher egg mass in Uxbridge along the Oak Ridge Moraine, thanin other ar- eas. The Ontario government has placed a two-year freeze on all development along the mo- raine, and it is Mayor O'Connor's fear that when the two-year period is over in the summer of 1993, there won't be any trees left. "They are taking away fund- ing for a program that affects an important area," she said. Regional Chairman Gary Herrema expressed similar sen- timents. "You'll have a lot of dead trees in three years if you don't have any spraying program," he said. "There'll be no Oak Ridge Mo- raine, it will be a dead moraine." In an effort to prevent the cancellation of the program, Big Brothers annual board meeting to be held March 10 The Big Brothers/Big Sis- ters Association of North Durham is holding its annu- al- board meeting on Tues- day, March 10 in the Com- munity Memorial Hospital boardroomin Port Perry. The association is in need of caring individuals who can get involved. Anyone wishing to sit on the board of this worthwhile, growing agency, please feel free to at- tend. ...WATCH FOR IT IN THE PORT PERRY STAR LEY P Councillor Christie, who also serves as vice-chairman of the Works Committee, introduced a three-part resolution urging the province to reconsider the deci- sion, reimburse funds which Durham has spent in 1992 on the spraying and "not attempt to download on the municipali- ties." This was passed unanimous- ly by council. In support of the motion, oth- er councillors expressed con- cern. Oshawa councillor Linda Dionne urged regional council to send a letter to the ministry expressing the region's concern. "I think we would be absolutely out of our minds not to pursue the matter," she said. It was estimated by Vic Sil- gailis, Commissioner of Works, that the region has spent ap- proximately $10,000 on the pro- gram to date. He requested that council approve an earlier rec- ommendation, dated before Feb. 13. He argued if this was passed the region could then at- tempt to collect the funds. This proposal was not favored by council, which preferred to send a message to the govern- ment advocating the continua- tion of the program.
