PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 10, 1992 - By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star With two weekend wins the Port Perry MoJacks could wrap up the Central Junior C title Thursday night. The ModJacks and the Little Britain Merchants entered weekend action tied at one game apiece in the best of seven series. The local club came out of the home and home series up three games to one. Sunday night the two teams squared off in Little Britain with the ModJacks squeaking out a 7-6 victory. The MoJacks got on the score- board first when Frank Kava- nagh put the puck behind Mer- chant goaltender, Kevin Petronski. Assists went to Clair Cornish and Mike Coulson. Jeff Budden tied the game at one on passes from Jeff Adams and Mark Taylor. John Lally got his first of a two-goal performance putting the MoJacks up one heading into the second period. Kevin Bagshaw and Trevor McIntyre picked up the assists. The second period was all Lit- tle Britain as they scored two to take the lead. Captain Greg Corneil knotted the score at 2-2 assisted by Steve Roberts. The third period was the scene of eight goals. Dan Burns, Corneil and Budden counted for the Merchants but it was not enough as the Modacks scored five of their own to take the 7-6 victory. Jarrett Harman from Todd Taylor tied the game for the Mo- Jacks. Then it was Mark McKay, Lally, Cornish and McIntyre each finding the net and snaring the victory for the home club. Saturday night's game in Port Perry was just as close as the Modacks once again squeezed out a one-goal win. The ModJacks got on the board first as Cornish found Coulson wide open in front of the Mer- chant net. Erickson also picked up an assiston the play. Little Britain came back to tie it at one as they took advantage of a ModJack penalty. Dan Burns found the net on a pass from Sheldon Evers. The MoJacks got a bad break with a little more than a minute gone in the second period when a rebound went off the skate of a MoJack defenceman and drib- bled past Cooper. The Merchants kept the pres- sure on as they had several chances but Cooper stonewalled the attacks. Petronski was also hot be- tween the pipes for the Mer- chants turning away ModJacks at every corner. He came up big with saves on Lally, Erickson and Coulson. The Modacks finally man- aged to put one past Petronski as Cornish made some nice moves to bring the puck up ice and found Erickson in front of the net who slipped it past the sprawling netminder. Coulson also picked up an assist on the play. Good penalty killing by Jeff Barr and Lally resulted in a short-handed goal as Lally's high wristshot beat the Mer- chant goalie to give the Mo- Jacks a 3-2lead. The Modacks added one more before the end of the period. Erickson on an unassisted ef- fort found an opening and back- handed the puck into the net for his second of a three-goal perfor- mace. Little Britain down by two goals came back within one as Steve Trumbull beat Cooper. Budden and Corneil picked up assists. Once again the ModJacks broke lose and Erickson beat Pe- tronski to record the hat trick. Cornish and McIntyre assisted on the play. Little Britain again came within one when Blain Harris picked up Corneil's leading pass and made it 5-4 ModJacks. Despite several close calls in front of the ModJack net in the dying minutes Cooper kept the MoJack"s 5-4 win intact. * kk The ModJacks could wrap the series up Thursday night as game five of the best of seven se- ries gets underway at 8:30 p.m. at Scugog Arena. KELLY LOWN/ PORT PERRY STAR The action was fast and furious around both goaltenders during Saturday night's MoJack, Little Britain Merchants match-up. The local team was victorious in both weekend games. Juveniles confident in their quest for All-Ontario crown Port Perry Juveniles had the op- portunity on the weekend to be one victory away from entering an All- Ontario final series for the first time in 20 years. Due to a 6-4 loss in Oak Ridges on Saturday, Port will have to wait for a couple more games before that dream becomes a reali- ty. It's been 32 years since a Port Perry Juvenile squad has won an All-Ontario title, a victory in 1959-60 against Port Dover. The hard work- ing Key Bar team remains confident that history will repeat itself in 1991-92. Port and Oak Ridges split the weekend series with Key Bar taking the opening game on Saturday at home with a 6-3 victory. The opening period on Saturday afternoon was a dandy for Port Perry. A beautiful three way pass- ing play between Scott Menzies, Craig Leask and Todd Taylor resulted in an early goal for Todd. The line set the pace with more than one fine passing play and some hard hits. They were rewarded with an ovation from the appreciative fans. Port Perry's other lines follows suit with great team play and their hard work resulted in two more goals in the period. Gerry Douma deflected a blast from the stick of Jody Wright on the point. Jan Heyes then set up John Ennis who made no mistake. Goalie Ray Doyle, with a combination of good goaltending, horseshoes and help from his defensemen, kept the visitors off the scoreboard. Jan Heyes got the only goal of the second period assisted by Jason Towns to give Port Perry a 4-0 lead. Unfortunately the period was mar- red by penalties taken by both teams. In the third period, Mike Sorley gave Key Bar a 5-0 lead on a fine pass from Gerry Douma before Oak Ridges finally got on the scoreboard. The visitors picked up three goals before Scott Menzies and Jan Heyes combined to get the final goal of the game. Jan got the marker following a centering pass from Menzies. Jody Wright, Steve Staniland, Jason Towns and Greg Fitzgerald are to be congratulated on their blue line play, especially in the penalty ridden second period. The Sunday evening game in Oak Ridges was a see-saw battle from beginning to end. After the final buzzer, Key Bar found themselves on the short end of a 6-4 score. The officiating was possibly the worst Port has faced this season. It was only because Key Bar kept their cool that a complete brawl did not take place. The frustrated Port Perry fans could not believe that Port was assessed more penalties than Oak Ridges. A blind eye was turned to the numerous stick infrac- tions Port had to contend with. Con- gratulations to Key Bar for attemp- ting to stick to hockey. Port Perry opened the scoring with a goal from Gerry Douma with assists going to Scott Porter and Scott Menzies. Oak Ridges tied it up, then Port went ahead with Gerry scoring again, this time assisted by Derek Fitzgerald. Oak Ridges tied it up again and once more Key Bar pulled ahead with Gerry Douma get- ting his hat trick assisted by Jody Wright and goalie Ray Doyle. Port Perry was given some questionable penalties and Oak Ridges netted three goals in less than a minute. Port made it 5-4 with a goal from Mike Sorley assisted by Jan Heyes. Oak Ridges sixth marker went into an empty net. Port Perry will have the chance to wrap up the series at home with the next two games at the Scugog Arena. If Key Barn maintains their discipline and remember that they are a team and play the way they are capable of playing, Port should be able to take both games. Mark these dates on your calendar, they promise to be real dandies. Port plays host Wednesday, March 11 at 9 p.m. and Saturday, March 14 at 8 p.m. This is one of the best Juvenile teams we've had in a lot of years, let's get behind them and show them some real fan sup- port. These boys deserve a noisy hometown crowd. B/R, Blackstock advance to finals Playoffs got back underway after a week off with Blackstock and B & R needing victories to advance. In game one B & R Swampers and Monsma played a cautious tight checking game until 10:28 of the se- cond period when Scott Heard step- ped out of the penalty box to convert a two on one with Dan Taylor. Mike Mitchell drew the other assist. With 3:21 left Murray Down made a nifty deke to tie the score at one. Jack Monsma and goalie Ken Lynde drew assists. With O.T. looming Monsma got themselves into penal- ty troubles which proved to be their downfall as Dan Taylor from Mike Geer scored :29 seconds into O.T. With a man advantage for the rest of O.T. Swampers just played keep away and came out with a 2-1 victory. In game two Brain McBride gave Woody's a 1-0 lead from Bob Clarke.
