Over the past two years, 14 homes have been on What sort of birthday present can you give to a t lady who is about to turn 90? This topic had the F one lines buzzing lately between our house and a slew of Great Aunt Hilda's relatives who wanted to properly mark the beginning of her tenth decade. After much discussion, we all decided to chip in to buy a new window for her living room, which we knew she wanted, and take her out for dinner at a fancy restaurant. We also had a limousine pick her up and deliver her to the restaurant for dinner. Aunt Hilda arrived, bless her, with steam coming from both ears because she was outraged at the amount of money we spent on the limo. "I made him tell me how much it cost!" she said, nodding at the driver, who avoided our eyes. "Outrageous. What I really wanted was a new window for my living room, blast it," she grumbled, adding: "Where are those twins?" And without further ado, as is her way, she marched off to where our niece Maxine's 11-month-old twin boys were cating the icing from a large birthday cake. "Little darlings!" she said, as she handed them each a spoon. "Aunt Hilda, no!" cried Maxine as Adam and Nathan dug in. Aunt Hilda snapped, "Those delightful boys can do whatever they like. [t's my birthday - do you know how old I am?" she asked, staring hard at Maxine. "How old am I, anyway? Is it 80 or 90? Doesn't matter. You let those boys eat that cake." Anyway, Aunt Hilda's living room window must be about 50 years old, and it's really beyond repair. We looked at a lot of windows before we finally decided on one that was energy-efficient. Windows are big energy losers - an average one can lose six to 10 times as much heat as the same area of wall. Energy-efficient windows can save money and energy, and also make your home a lot more comfortable, winter and summer. They cost a bit more, but the payback period through lowered energy bills can also be as short as six ycars-when you compare them with standard windows. And because they're so popular, they're also available in a lot of different styles and "designer" shapes like octagonal, circular and semi- circular. Our dinner party went well, and Aunt Hilda's crustiness melted away when she heard about her new window. Then she started thinking about it. "Well, who's going to put this new window in?" she kept asking. "Don't go wrecking it, now! I won't have it! Who wants dessert?" she said, reaching for the remains of her birthday cake, which was filled with large craters and had two spoons embedded in it. "Nathan and Adam first!" And then she added, "You can never have too much birthday cake." Who was going to argue with her?
