By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star About 30 area young people were on a high note yesterda during the finals in the "Josep Choral Challenge." Both Northern Explosion and the Uxbridge Boys Choir com- peted in the final round of tryouts for a part in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." Northern Explosion was one of four choirs chosen to perform in the musical this summer. Northern Explosion is com- prised of 25 female students from R. H. Cornish Public School and Port Perry High School and is directed by Dawn Taylor and Harvey Friede. Of the eight boys in the Ux- bridge Boys Choir, five are from Scugog Township. Their choir leaderis Donna van Veghel. The names of the other three choirs chosen were not availa- ble before the Star's deadline last night. Making the difficult decision was Robert Cooper, Lloyd Brad- shaw and Lori Dolloff. Mr. Cooper is the executive producer of CBC Radio Music and producer of CBC's Choral Concert. Mr. Bradshaw is the founder of the Canadian Opera Compa- ny's Children's Chorus, founder of the Orpheus Choir and is cur- rently the musical director of the Toronto Boys Choir at St. Annes' Church. Ms. Dolloff is a professor of children's musical education at the Faculty of Music, Universi- ty of Toronto. Before the final results were given, members of the 10 choirs Joined together on the stage with Donny Osmond who will starin the title role of Joseph. This was the final round of tryouts. Bobbie Drew, a member of the Scugog Choral Society and a school board trustee, told the Star on Friday she's thrilled with the success of the local choirs. "Just to get this far is a great experience for everybody," she said. "They're winners already in myeyes." Mrs. Drew applauded the choirleaders for the time and ef- fort they have given the chil- dren. "They are putting (Scugog) on the map again." "I always felt Scugog was a great place for the arts," she said. "The talent in this area is getting well known." Although she has not had the chance to hear the Uxbridge Boys Choir perform, Mrs. Drew dropped in to the Northern Ex- plosion's practise on Friday. "They have a beautiful blend," she says. "Their chore- ography is good, too."
